Sha'Carri Richardson, a Track Sensation, Tests Positive for Marijuana

Source: NY Times

The American sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson, who was set for a star turn at the Tokyo Olympics this month, could miss the Games after testing positive for marijuana.

Richardson, 21, won the women’s 100-meter race at the U.S. track and field trials in Oregon last month, but her positive test automatically invalidated her result in that marquee event.

The United States Anti-Doping Agency announced the positive test result Friday morning, and said Richardson had accepted a suspension of one month, starting on June 28. That could clear her in time to run in the 4x100 meter relay that takes place later in the Games — if she is named to the U.S. team.

In an interview with NBC on Friday, Richardson blamed the positive test on her use of marijuana as a way to cope with the unexpected death of her biological mother while she was in Oregon for the Olympic trials. Richardson, who was raised by her grandmother, said she learned about the death from a reporter during an interview and called it triggering and “definitely nerve-shocking.”

3. After reading about, today I tested it. I usually

just smoke two puffs before bed. Today I took two puffs before my daily 5K just to see what would happen. Ran one of my best times and the fastest 3rd mile ever.
Seemed much easier to focus on form and breathing. Was not tired and no pain afterward.

Wish someone else could give it a try and report back. She might be on to something.

12. Mood, focus, reduced pain

It’s not rocket science. Dosage and individual reactions are key.

Common anti-depressants are banned, absent a therapeutic use exemption.

But people have been going on for years about how it helps with this that and the other thing, and suddenly are shocked, shocked to find out it has significant, and relatively benign, psychological and physical effects. It’s like we’ve found the ONE thing it won’t help. Lol.

Very hard to standardize as every strain, every plant and every part of that plant are different.

Edibles made with extracts are pretty well controlled to the states cannabinoid contents on the assay label.

33. They don't list all the active cannabinoids.

Just cbd.

With "flower" they don't list cbc and thc-a.

EtA: Here are all the active cannabinoids they don't test for:

CBGA (Cannabigerolic acid)
THCA (Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinolic acid)
CBDA (Cannabidiolic acid)
CBCA (Cannabichromenenic acid)
CBGVA (Cannabigerovarinic acid)
THCVA (Tetrahydrocanabivarinic acid)
CBDVA (Cannabidivarinic acid)
CBCVA (Cannabichromevarinic acid)

7. Marijuana is not a PED

USADA and WADA need to get their collective heads out of their collective asses here. If anything, it might make her run slower. Anyway, it's legal in a whole lot of states (more coming) and quite a few countries. Alcohol isn't tested for, so what's the BFD? They really need to get over themselves and stop playing J. Edgar.

8. Almost Completely Agree

It's a monumentally stupid rule if they apply it to pot. It needs to be expunged.
However, while a stupid rule, it's not a secret rule.
Sha'Carri should have found some other way to cope with that bad news, because she did risk, knowledgeably, the Olympics.
I feel bad for her, but that doesn't stop me from wondering what heck was she thinking.

13. Why do so many athletes think it is?

https://greatist.com/play/marijuana-effects-on-runners

A 2011 study also suggested that cannabis can have the following positive effects on athletes:Trusted Source

increase how much oxygen reaches tissues

improve vision and concentration

help athletes forget previous traumatic experiences related to the activity, such as falls or injuries
reduce muscle spasms

aid in pain relief

vastly improve a person’s ability to quote Wiz Khalifa lyrics (this is not in the study, but can also prove advantageous in some situations)

If I’m doing a century ride, about 5mg THC into the last 20 miles makes a huge difference in how that feels during and after.

14. It does have benefits.

https://www.muscleandfitness.com/workouts/workout-tips/marijuana-affect-athletic-performance/

The problem is, it's illegal in a lot of countries, so international sports organizations have to decide whether to outlaw it for everyone, or allow it and let some athletes have an advantage.

10. It's high time society removed it's collective head from it's ass.

If she had coped with the unexpected anxiety resulting from her loss in a socially approved manner such as alcohol, a known poison, she could have compromised her training regimen, but a relatively benign substance such as marijuana results in her being punished.

22. A lot of states have legalized the use of cannabis.

both for recreational purposes, or for self medication.

Looks like a lot of sporting bodies say NO!

So if you are an athlete prone to getting drug tested, forget the recreational/medication use of cannabis.

Clash of cultures, that is!'

I don't care how much you like something, making the Olympics is a lifelong dream. She knew she would get tested at some point. Smoke when you get back.

It's also banned in baseball and will get you a hefty suspension. With that being said, it's an archaic rule.

39. why do drugs get listed?

per the USADA, substances can be banned if they meet 2 of these 3 criteria:

It has the potential to enhance or enhances sport performance.
It represents an actual or potential health risk to the athlete.
It violates the spirit of sport.

Marijuana is not an absolutely banned/prohibited substance under the WADA.

Marijuana, again according to the GlobalDRO, is an "in competition" prohibited substance but not prohibited "out of competition".

The GlobalDRO defines "in" & "out" as

"In-Competition” begins at 11:59pm on the day before a competition in which the athlete is scheduled to participate, through the end of the competition and the sample collection process related to the competition.

"Out-of-Competition" is any time that is not in-competition (e.g. training, off-season, the days between competitions).

The USADA directs web searches to WADA/GlobalDRO for searches on specific drugs.
