Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards signs abortion pill "reversal" bill

Source: Axios

Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards (D) signed a bill into law Friday that requires doctors to tell patients who take the abortion pill that they may halt the pregnancy termination halfway through the process.

Why it matters: The legislation passed through the GOP-dominated Louisiana state legislature weeks prior. It's one of many anti-abortion bills Edwards signed on Friday.

Between the lines: The measure promotes the sharing of details on “reversing” a medication-induced abortion, a claim not backed by scientific evidence from professional groups such as the American Medical Association.

The law states that when the drug is provided, all doctors must staple a specific “disclosure statement” onto “a bag, envelope, or other package that contains misoprostol for the pregnant woman to self-administer at home.”

If a woman decides to do that, does it have an effect on the fetus? Does it make her more likely to miscarry, and the risks associated with that?

A doctor will have to follow the law and tell their patients this BS, but they can also tell their patients that while they are required by law to say it, they are not prohibited by law from then reminding their patients that it is complete nonsense.

As long as they don't come up with a law preventing that, which would surely be a 1st Amendment violation.

Indiana has basically the same law, which was to have gone into effect July 1. A federal judge has blocked its implementation. I assume that could carry some force in Louisiana as well.

The Indiana General Assembly rejected scientific facts and professional opinion and relied on emotions and anecdotal evidence to pass this bill. It was perhaps one of the more disgusting pieces of legislation I’ve seen here in quite awhile, and that’s saying something. Basically, they legalized snake oil.

This blatant pandering to the base is getting to be pretty damn expensive. Every year they push bullshit like this through, it gets challenged, and the courts end up shooting it down. I’m sure states like Indiana are looking for “the” case that will make the Supreme Court reexamine Roe. But this shit is getting worse (and more ridiculous) every session.
