Pope Francis to Undergo Colon Surgery

Source: new york times

The Vatican announced on Sunday that Pope Francis had been admitted to a hospital in Rome for colon surgery.

Matteo Bruni, a Vatican spokesman, said in a statement that Francis, 84, had been taken to the Gemelli hospital in the Italian capital. Mr. Bruni said the “scheduled surgery” would take place later on Sunday, and noted that a medical bulletin would be issued afterward. He said that the pope had “symptomatic diverticular stenosis of the colon.”

The surgery would be performed by Dr. Sergio Alfieri, who heads the hospital’s complex operational unit for digestive surgery, the Vatican said.

I feel sorry for him, I've been plagued with the disease since my early 20's. I've had Multiple hospitalizations over the years, fortunately medications, iv's and bed rest can get it under control. When active, it can be excruciatingly painful. I had a reminder this past week, stay away from roughage (salads).

...man in the world? Choosing science over GOD? Guess he's not a true believer after all.

While he talks a good, vague talk about us, his solution is still to advise the clergy to "minister" us out of our sin.

Regarding abortion, there's ample evidence that there is nobody home inside the human brain until somewhat near birth. The organized connectivity simply isn't there yet.

And simply pray to be cured?

I suspect that would be ridiculed as well

they have been sponsoring it for hundreds of years despite unfortunate events like Galileo which they later said was a mistake. Genetics for example was pioneered by Mendel who was a Friar and Abbot with full support of the church.

Also one does not "believe" in science, one accepts the findings and established facts unless they are disproven by something proven to be more likely true.

I am a scientist ( Physicist) and I am using the colloquial expression about "believing" in science. Obviously it's about facts not beliefs.

science. The RC church does have aspects of faith healing a la visiting shrines like Lourdes, and Padre Pio.

But Catholics visit doctors. Hell, I was taught evolution in Catholic school Edit: the pontifical academy of sciences is in the Vatican.

if someone is mentally ill, and believes they're possessed, praying over them may help them. There's not enough info to tell from the article if it's an exorcism going on.

But the main point of my post is that Catholics see doctors and are not anti-science.

8. For all of its issues, at least the church does not pit science against religion.

There are many criticisms that I have with the church, but that’s not one of them.

A comparative religions class would be good for you. I think you would find it interesting.

I hope researchers can find more ways to control the condition.

As for the Holy Father, it sounds as though his procedure went well.
