American Airlines cancels flight after teens refuse to wear masks
Source: MSN
American Airlines was forced to cancel a flight from North Carolina to the Bahamas after a group of 30 teenagers refused to wear face masks - and they were then forced to sleep in the airport overnight because they were too young to check into a hotel.
Flight 893 was scheduled to depart from Charlotte Douglas International Airport enroute to Nassau on Monday when passengers say the group of teens from Boston started being 'very obnoxious'.
Fellow passengers say the group, aged 17 and 18, refused to wear their masks as required.
The group were believed to be on their way to the Bahamas for a graduation trip.

(8,445 posts)My son, his wife, and their two-year-old flew about a month ago. It was a pleasure trip, so I wasn't really happy that they were going during the pandemic, but it wasn't my decision. They started working on getting her adjusted to wear a mask about a month ahead of time. She did pretty good, but she definitely wasn't always in compliance. Fortunately they didn't get kicked off any of their flights. Even more fortunately, she didn't get sick. I was much more worried about that last possible scenario than about them getting kicked off of a flight.
I wonder if it's other passengers complaining in a lot of these cases of toddlers getting kicked off. My son said that on the way back my granddaughter hardly had her mask on at all and nobody said anything. On top of that, she was very grumpy. It was a pretty big trip for a two-year-old. On about the 8th day she said she wanted to go home. She missed her toys and her room and her routine. I could have told them that was going to happen, but I kept my mouth shut so they could learn their own lessons.

Edit: He never even tried to get her to wear it because it wasn't bent at all. At least he could have seen if she could handle it. He couldn't have made it into a game or something. And I don't know when this was and/or if people had access to vaccinations at that point.

As I said up above, my son and his wife started working with their two year old about a month before they flew. She was pretty good about keeping her mask on at the beginning of their trip, but by the time the return trip rolled around, she was not a happy camper about it.
I thought they were being very ambitious with their vacation plans, but I learned a long time ago to just enjoy the grandkids and keep my unasked-for-advice to myself, so I kept my mouth shut.
Editing to add: They actually invited me to go with them, and I knew it was best to decline.

Those on the flight were given hotel and meal vouchers while they waited for the new flight.

Prior to the mask incident unfolding, the aircraft had experienced technical difficulties, which meant all passengers had to change planes and were already delayed.

I've had an uncounted number of flights canceled because of expired crews. They can only work so many hours in a day, and if they won't land before that limit they can't take off.

I knew kids growing up whose parents were perfectly normal people who taught them right from wrong, but then the "rebellious teen" switch got flipped. Most of them had grown out of it by the time we graduated high school, though. Still, punishing parents for the behavior of their kids isn't something I'd support, especially for the ones who were 18 and therefore legal adults.
Now if the parent defended their precious punkin and maintained that they'd done nothing wrong, then they can share in the kid's punishment. If that had been my kid, I'd have been like, "Guess who's not going to the Bahamas? That's right, pal, it's you. Bring your silly ass home. (2,990 posts)If my flight got cancelled because a group of selfish people (regardless of age) decided to pull a stunt like this, I'd be pretty hacked off - especially if I was headed to a funeral, a job interview, a wedding, or anything else like that.
For what it's worth, having a group like this chaperoned doesn't always make a difference -
I was once on a transatlantic flight from Europe that was almost cancelled because of a group of teenagers. They were American teens presumably on their way back to the US after some sort of group trip, and they were very, very excited. They simply wouldn't shut up, and none of them seems to have ever learned what an "indoor voice" is.
Before we boarded, I personally asked their chaperone (teacher?) if she could get them to cool off. I'm hearing-impaired, and their noise made it impossible for me to hear announcements. (I would imagine even passengers with full hearing also found it difficult.) She mumbled something about how kids are going to be kids, but that she'd try. If she did, it made no impact.
(For the record - I know teens get excited when they travel. I was once such a teen. Heck, I still get excited, depending on where I'm going. But excitement crosses a line when it interferes with other passengers' efforts to hear announcements or sleep on the plane.)
We were allowed to proceed only because the chaperone assured the gate agents and flight attendants that the teens would behave once they got on the plane.
That lasted until a few minutes after takeoff. To this good day, I don't know why the plane wasn't diverted so these passengers could be taken off.
And the punch line? They were all seated toward the back of the plane (a Boeing 777, IIRC) and were facing a tight connection - so once we landed, their chaperone asked them, loudly enough for the rest of us to hear, to "start working your way forward." The chaperone was literally telling them to start cutting in front of other passengers, many of whom (including me) also had tight connections.
The teens started to do this, but they didn't get far. No one on the plane seemed inclined to make way for them.
No idea if they made their connection.
I really, really hope they didn't behave like that in Europe.
Had the flight been cancelled or delayed because of this poorly-led group, I'd have done something to hold them and ESPECIALLY their chaperone accountable.

(2,689 posts)Some teens are just born that way, others are raised to be jerks and fools.
What is surprising is that, after the terrible inconvenience they caused to other paying customers, they were allowed on another flight. Causing a flight to cancel because of your a-hole behavior is not the same as throwing spitballs in class. What am I missing here?
Maybe the airline couldnt identify the maskless idiots quickly and so couldnt just condemn the whole group out of hand? No, sorry, yes the airline could condemn the whole group out of hand. Simply by interviewing each kid individually and asking them to identify the perps. If you dont identify the perps, you dont fly. Meanwhile, review videos to make a separate ID of the a-holes and target them individually for the no-fly list.
But dont just make them wait for the next flight as if their criminality was just, "like, so cool, man, lmfao!"
Will some rich kid Daddies sue? Fine. Bring it on. Let a jury decide what was more important: some rich kids criminal fun or the safety of the other passengers on the flight.

(6,144 posts)They were acting like a gang, and should be treated with the same level of respect they showed to the airline, flight crew, and other passengers.
In other words, none.

Hope they enjoyed their Airport Vacation.
I'd be mad as hell if I were on that plane going to the Bahamas!

(5,059 posts)I can't remember where to--out west, like AZ, I think.
He bought a book in the airport bookstore to read, a thriller with scary stuff on the cover. He wasn't allowed to fly because he might be a terrorist. He went home and came back the next day with a Harry Potter book. Security remembered him and wouldn't let him on the plane. I can't remember how it ended up, if he ever got to join his family or not.
That's quite a change from letting 30 brats delay everyone's flight for a day. I've no idea why they didn't throw the brats off and let others continue.

(9,532 posts)fine them and ban them from the airline for the next year or two. But let others on board go forward with their trip.
Now that it's cancelled, the airline should refund tickets for the innocent victims and sue the teen brats and their parents for these costs, plus punitive damages as well as compensatory.

(32,552 posts)I find it hard to believe that no adults were on this trip. But even if that's true, parents were still involved because airline tickets can only be purchased via credit card any more. If 18 kids went on the trip then 18 sets of parents paid for their tickets and probably everything else included.
You don't send your underage kid to a foreign country unchaperoned in this day and age. Especially after all the stories of abductions, kidnappings, murders, and robberies on foreign soil. No Americans are safe any more. Parents need to be held responsible, whether their children have been raised to behave correctly or not.

Get used to it, that should have happened about a decade ago for you.
'You are not the boss of me!' doesn't work when you are 17 or 18.
