Toyota will stop donating to Republicans who objected to election certification
Source: NBC News
The Lincoln Project announced it's now buying ads against companies that donate to members of Congress who voted not to certify the election.
WASHINGTON Japanese automaker Toyota announced Thursday it will stop contributing to Republican members of Congress who on Jan. 6 voted against certifying the 2020 election results after a PAC said it would begin running ads criticizing companies for such donations.
Toyota's decision to donate to those lawmakers after Jan. 6 "troubled some stakeholders," and for that reason "we have decided to stop contributing to those Members of Congress," the company said in a statement.
The move came after an announcement by the Lincoln Project, a PAC formed by Republicans to defeat then-President Donald Trump in 2020, that it would target corporations that donated to Republicans who opposed the formalization of Joe Biden's 2020 presidential victory. An advertisement aimed at Toyota ran on Thursday.
"Toyota made the right choice today," the Lincoln Project posted on Twitter after Toyota's reversal.

I'm sure Toyota will stop donating to them this quarter. They'll just make up for it next quarter. I suggest following the money at places like Open Secrets before any major purchases.
These guys need to know we're paying attention.

(64,995 posts)When the backlash hit, PR & Marketing folks are sure to have done a cost/benefit review.
Most of those seditionist reps are nothing. Backbenchers, obscure veterans & young flamethrowers without any real power.
The hit to the brand, over donations equal to the cost of a Lexus, likely led to the conclusion that there was no longer an upside to donating to those people, and the downside orders of magnitude greater than the upside.
They give to both parties (already fairly cynical) and saving $55k and cutting those slimeballs loose has no further downside to them.
The value analysis almost assuredly declares those donations, money ill-spent.
It's way too easy to just cut them off permanently.

Their PR & Marketing people are seething right now!
Over what, to a company this big, is chump change.

(64,995 posts)These donations were reported by 3 different watchdog groups.
The data is out there.
The damage done to their brand over $55k means they likely won't take the risk anymore. Just not worth it.
How much benefit did they really get for $55k, mostly to representatives with minimal clout?
It's easiest to cut those seditious jerks loose.

If(!) someone found out, brand damage ensues.
They just found that out.
These puny donations aren't worth the trouble.

(53,997 posts)It's time to outlaw corporate donations.
It's time to outlaw lobbying from affiliates of people who donate to candidates. If you donate and lobby, it's legalized bribery, period.

(13,591 posts)Scores of Toyota pickups seen in terror videos to dismay of Iraqi officials.
By MATTHEW MOSK, BRIAN ROSS and ALEX HOSENBALL
October 6, 2015, 9:43 AM
-- U.S. counter-terror officials have asked Toyota, the worlds second largest auto maker, to help them determine how ISIS has managed to acquire the large number of Toyota pick-up trucks and SUVs seen prominently in the terror groups propaganda videos in Iraq, Syria and Libya, ABC News has learned. Toyota says it does not know how ISIS obtained the vehicles and is supporting the inquiry led by the Terror Financing unit of the Treasury Department -- part of a broad U.S. effort to prevent Western-made goods from ending up in the hands of the terror group.
---
Toyota Hilux pickups, an overseas model similar to the Toyota Tacoma, and Toyota Land Cruisers have become fixtures in videos of the ISIS campaign in Iraq, Syria and Libya, with their truck beds loaded with heavy weapons and cabs jammed with terrorists. The Iraqi Ambassador to the United States, Lukman Faily, told ABC News that in addition to re-purposing older trucks, his government believes ISIS has acquired hundreds of brand new Toyotas in recent years.
This is a question weve been asking our neighbors, Faily said. How could these brand new trucks... these four wheel drives, hundreds of them -- where are they coming from? ISIS propaganda videos show gunmen patrolling Syrian streets in what appear to be older and newer model white Hilux pick-ups bearing the black caliphate seal and crossing Libya in long caravans of gleaming tan Toyota Land Cruisers. When ISIS soldiers paraded through the center of Raqqa, more than two-thirds of the vehicles were the familiar white Toyotas with the black emblems. There were small numbers of other brands including Mitsubishi, Hyundai and Isuzu.
Regrettably, the Toyota Land Cruiser and Hilux have effectively become almost part of the ISIS brand, said Mark Wallace, a former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, who is CEO of the Counter Extremism Project, a non-profit working to expose the financial support networks of terror groups. ISIS has used these vehicles in order to engage in military-type activities, terror activities, and the like, Wallace told ABC News. But in nearly every ISIS video, they show a fleet -- a convoy of Toyota vehicles and thats very concerning to us.

"The Lincoln Project also criticized the cable company Comcast for refusing to air their advertisement and "opting instead to shield corporate advertisers," the group said in a tweet. Comcast owns NBCUniversal, the parent company of NBC News. A representative for Comcast did not immediately respond to a request for comment."
