Swarm of earthquakes, including magnitude 6.0 quake, felt across NorCal

Source: KCRA 3

Several earthquakes rattled Northern California within minutes of each other Thursday afternoon, according to the United States Geological Survey.

Between Walker and Coleville in Mono County, about 23 miles southwest of Smith Valley, Nevada, a magnitude 6.0 earthquake was recorded around 3:50 p.m. Since that quake, the USGS has reported several other shakes either in Nevada or across the state border in Mono, Tuolumne and Alpine counties. The earthquake was originally reported as magnitude 5.9 but was since revised to 6.0 around 5:45 p.m. by the USGS.

An earthquake in Farmington in San Joaquin County was originally reported by the USGS but that entry was since taken off the list of recent quakes. California seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones explained automatic systems that locate quakes sometimes get confused, especially if there are not many stations in the area.

Caltrans said it has reopened Highway 395 from Bridgeport in Mono County to the Nevada state line. It was originally closed as crews worked to clear rockslides caused by the magnitude 6.0 earthquake. The Mono County Sheriff said outside of the rockslides at Chris Flat in Walker Canyon, there are no reports of significant damage at this time.

Automatic systems that locate quakes sometimes get confused, especially if there are very nearby few stations. The webpages get updated when those mistakes are corrected. If you look now, you will see there is no earthquake near Stockton, only the M5.9 south of Lake Tahoe.

I know CA is obviously earthquake land but this made the national news overnight for the intensity. It was also apparently associated with a little swarm.

A 6.0 magnitude #earthquake that struck south of Lake Tahoe Thursday afternoon was felt across the Bay Area. Several aftershocks, including a 4.6 magnitude temblor, rattled the Sierra Nevada.

was interesting. I know here on the east coast. the old mountain chains and geological structure allows for quake motion transfer for some distance - for example back in 2011 and the Mineral, VA 5.8 earthquake felt all the way up to MA (I know I felt that here in Philly as my work building was swaying and rocking forward and back, as was the chair I was sitting in ).

Same earthquake. At first, I wasn't sure!

I don't think of us on the East Coast of having earthquakes, apparently they get used to them in California, but if we experience one, we remember! It's pretty remarkable that you experienced such a strong one - that must have been the top news story of the day!

I've only experienced one, but I sure remember. It was back in the early '90s, I think, just before dawn. I worked nights at the time and I was sitting on the edge of my bed, just going to sleep, when my dog rushed in, ran right up to me and he was shaking like a leaf, his tags were jingling!

And then I felt it, one of the weirdest things I've ever felt, like nothing was stable and there was no place to go! I figured it out, though, grabbed my dog and went in my closet! I thought you were supposed to get into a door frame, like the guy in the video said. And it turned out that it was really an earthquake, we heard about it the next day - and of course it was big news around here, not something that ever happens in these parts!

And it was really true what they say, my dog experienced it first!

6. I think my first earthquake that I recall

was back around 1973 in this area. It happened in the middle of the night and I remember I had one of those 17oz glasses on a table next to my bed with a long ice teaspoon in it and it started rattling and my bed was vibrating a little. The next morning my dad said it was a small earthquake.

And yup - the animals sense it first (am guessing they are hearing sound frequencies just before), so I know your pup was probably terrified.

But that one in 2011 was pretty bad - particularly for D.C. because it damaged the Washington Monument and there were videos broadcast around that time showing the poor people who were inside touring the Monument right when the earthquake happened and how they were running down the tiny staircase to get out while little pieces of the monument were falling inside and out. The Monument was closed for awhile so they could assess and then repair the damage to it.

They had checked the buildings here in Philly and they were mostly intact, with some broken windows in the downtown high rises and some possibly having some plaster damage, but the shaking was pretty dramatic. We evacuated our building just after it happened just in case. They also had to check the train (subway, el, commuter) system here to make sure there was no damage to the rail beds or rails.

I know there are several old faults in this area so you just never know, even though the 2011 one did not even originate here but down in VA.

but I don't know if they are doing it in California - at least where this originated... Hell, my very first trip to California (SoCal - i.e., Los Angeles) shocked the hell out of me because of the oil wells I saw all along the highways. I was like WTF?

They just don't show you that "on TV" (at least around these parts ).

I don't recall seeing any wells when I visited NoCal though (San Francisco/Oakland).

I think we may have had a lesser one after the one I remember that was so slight that we weren't sure that's what it was till we read about it.

And yes, my poor pup was just terrified, I never saw him shake like that before or after, and he was the one dog I've had that was afraid of thunder - and fireworks! He was inconsolable. My Dad used to sit with the dog on his lap with his hands over the pup's ears. I took him to work with me on the 4th of July since we could hear nothing in that building, he just went to sleep. He was a Cairn Terrier, like Toto - and he lived to 18 1/2. I knew his exact birthday.

And I think I remember hearing about the monument at the time - wasn't it still under repair for years? That had to be terrifying, since it's not like you can just run outside! I've never been up in it, though I did once climb to the top of the Statue of Liberty - only to the crown since the arm was also closed. I seem to have tough luck with visiting monuments - when I was in Moscow, the definitive symbol, St. Basil's, was also closed for repairs - was covered with scaffolds at the time. And it seems like the Schuylerville Monument, commemorating the Revolution, was closed for repairs for half of my life.

And that must have been some earthquake if they were checking buildings for damage that far away! I'd say we were lucky in that regard, but we have our own issues. While the West Coast is baking, I'd give a lot for a day without rain here. And it doesn't just sprinkle, there's wind and thunder, too. We've been having power outages and branches down all over. The other day I saw a huge tree uprooted on my way home.

I remember being taught in school about how the east coast was "old" and the west coast was "still young and growing" in a geologic sense.

I have been up in the Washington Monument - but well over 30 years ago before they did some renovation of it (before the quake). The little room at the top where the little windows are, is really tiny in any case. I think what happened in the 2011 case is that (I don't recall the technical terms for it) the rock plates that run up the coast are pretty much all connected as one long piece, so the vibrations just radiate right up the line like vibrating a string, where a "wave" moves along the string from one end to the other. Good old physics and energy transfer.

Any of the masonry towers like the ones you describe and including here in Philly with our City Hall tower (that has a small observation deck) can get damaged from swaying. That tower is over 500 ft tall and has an almost 40ft statue of William Penn on top (that tends to get decorated with Philly team stuff every once in awhile ). I haven't been up there in at least 40 years (and have never seen the renovation of the deck).

And my sister's black lab hates hates fireworks. I remember a couple years ago being at her house out on the deck on July 4th and every time someone in her neighborhood set one off, he would growl and bark. My BIL had to keep him close to calm him down. I know they sell those little "calming" jackets for those pets who are really sensitive to it.

And I have been following TS Elsa up the coast and we got spared from most of the rain here in Philly but Jersey got a good soaking. I am really surprised that storm held together this long considering it was literally in pieces and parts but still holding together and zooming along at almost 30 mph both, down in the Caribbean before it hit Cuba, and even as it barreled through the SE states after it regained strength, including zooming right off the coast of Jersey earlier this morning.

I didn't feel the big 6.0 one this afternoon, but I was outside unloading groceries from the car. My daughter was upstairs reading and she felt it. She came running downstairs to ask if I felt it. We googled, and at that time, they were saying it was a 4.8 quake near Stockton. We've been watching the USGS site all night, and I have to say it's creeping me out a bit that the aftershocks have not stopped, and are still coming very close together (within minutes) 12 hours later. Swarms within swarms. It's odd. Most are weak, but they're still indicative of moving rock. Hopefully, it will ease up soon with no more strong quakes. Scary.

and the 5.8 one is coming from University of Nevada/Reno's Seismic Laboratory - http://www.seismo.unr.edu/Events/main.php?evid=811145

I know they all revise over time so it will be interesting to see what they settle on. But the fact that a pile of just-under-3.0 magnitude little guys are still happening is hopefully not foretelling something (although I know the bigger guys usually have some small aftershocks for days afterwards).

Glad you are doing okay where you are because any place above the ground floor is usually going to sway/rock more!

Earthquakes on the West coast. Tornadoes on the East coast. This is reminding me of the movie, "Day After Tomorrow", more all the time.
