Biden tells Putin the U.S. will take 'any necessary action' after latest massive ransomware attack

Source: Washington Post

President Biden told Russian President Vladimir Putin Friday that the United States will take “any necessary action” after the latest massive ransomware attack, the White House said.

Biden has been under pressure to counter and blunt the impact of the costly, increasingly brazen assaults by what the U.S. says are Russia-based hackers. The president has warned Putin that the United States would hold Moscow responsible for cyberattacks originating from Russia even if they cannot be directly linked to the Kremlin.

In a statement, the White House said the president, in a call to Putin, “underscored the need for Russia to take action to disrupt ransomware groups operating in Russia and emphasized that he is committed to continued engagement on the broader threat posed by ransomware.”

While intelligence officials have not publicly attributed blame for the latest attack, a group known as REvil, which U.S. officials say privately operates largely from Russia, has taken responsibility for striking up to 1,500 companies in the United States, Europe and Asia. It was, experts say, the single largest such cyberattack to date. “Biden reiterated that the United States will take any necessary action to defend its people and its critical infrastructure in the face of this continuing challenge,” the White House said.

Anything stronger than more sanctions?

Article has a paywall, so can't read it.

Psaki declined to say what actions the United States might take in response.

I haven't been watching Psaki's daily pressers so it may have been taken from remarks from that. There was a briefing done today about an hour ago... The WH website hasn't uploaded their video from it yet.

In fact I just checked and CSPAN has the transcript here and the subject did come up - https://www.c-span.org/video/?513288-1/white-house-press-secretary-holds-briefing&live

(not sure if you need a cable sub to look at that link - to watch them from their website you usually do but other links there don't usually need that)

Just to let Putin know that Joe means what he says.

I'm sure the Pentagon and NSA have some nasty viruses locked up that they could deploy in the field.

The other part says get ready for the same right back at us, if not with an added "punch" of some type. If we stuxnet their electrical grids, they'd probably then take ours out asap, as well as hit the nuclear plants, IMO.

This is the problem with the "do this or else" kind of bargaining; like a parent, you have to be ready to back up your threat. But if you do, then get ready for the tit-for-tat blowback.

As a techy, this makes me very nervous...

We need to publicly release Putin and his oligarchs’ numerous personal, secret bank accounts worldwide.

I wonder if their talents can be enlisted to attack and bring down the entire Russian security system? Just wipe the entire Russian computer grid off the face of the earth, and let them go back to using the abacus and carrier pigeons. Protect the hospitals and other health facilities, but everything else is fair game.

Enough of this "Gosh, we wish you wouldn't do that." Make them hurt and hurt bad.

Back in 2018.

The IRA is sort of Putin's in-house hacker group.

Reported in various media, but only one real source. Take the claim for what it's worth.
