10,345: Netherlands reports most new coronavirus cases since Christmas
Source: NL Times (Netherlands)
Public health agency RIVM reported the most new coronavirus infections in the Netherlands in a single day since last Christmas. Some 10,345 more people tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, which raised the seven day average by 41 percent to 4,504. These figures were reported by the RIVM at a time when the Covid-19 vaccination campaign has also shown signs of slowing down.
The coronavirus infections daily average was now 7.5 times higher than eleven days ago, when the figure hit a low point following the third wave of infections. That low mark was set on June 30, four days after the Cabinet released most coronavirus restrictions in the Netherlands, but then the months long trend of declining figures quickly reversed course.

(55,525 posts)and many countries are seeing over 100% increase in new cases in the last week. Cuba, France, Greece, Thailand, Spain, Russia, etc. And in some countries the deaths are increasing rapidly as well. When I look at some of the graphs my eyes pop out of my head. This current spike in new cases isn't gradual in many countries, in fact it appears to go almost straight up, 90° angle.

(3,379 posts)99% of the people (family and associates) I know in the Netherlands are pretty hardcore anti-maskers. They are also American expats.

(955 posts)Of my small circle of expat friends, only one is antivax and antimask (though she wore masks when they were required). Most of my friends are still wearing masks inside, though that may be when they're with me. They're all fully vaccinated or waiting for their second dose.
Dropping the mask requirement was stupid. I think we're following (or leading, really) the British/ Swedish experiment: get everyone sick before fall.
My Actual Dutch friends (also a small group; most of my time here has been in lockdown) think the government is full of idiots and we all need masks and vaccines before they drop restrictions.
