Joe Manchin says he's 'very, very' disturbed about reconciliation proposals on climate change
Source: CNN
Sen. Joe Manchin, the Democrats' most pivotal swing vote, expressed his most serious concerns yet about a key element in their party's $3.5 trillion sweeping economic plan: Provisions dealing with climate change that have been sought by progressives.
Manchin, who hails from coal-producing West Virginia, told CNN that he's "very, very disturbed" by provisions he believes would eliminate fossil fuels -- a warning sign for Democrats who need all 50 members of their caucus to sign off on the plan in order to get it through the Senate. But the climate provisions are key to getting support from liberals, particularly in the House.
...
"Because if they're eliminating fossils, and I'm finding out there's a lot of language in places they're eliminating fossils, which is very, very disturbing, because if you're sticking your head in the sand, and saying that fossil (fuel) has to be eliminated in America, and they want to get rid of it, and thinking that's going to clean up the global climate, it won't clean it up all. If anything, it would be worse."
Democrats still need to draft their bill to expand the social safety net, which would go through the budget reconciliation process by September and cannot be filibustered, meaning it can advance with just 51 votes rather than 60.

I don't think anyone is promoting ending it immediately though. Just phased out?
Banning fossil fuels will not help the climate, "If anything, it would be worse." Where the hell is the science for that?!

(9,981 posts)We do not have electic airplanes or ships, nor do we have a US military that can function without fossil fuels. We will need some level of such energy sources for decades to comebut we do not need coal, and those jobs can be replaced with cleaner (and safer) jobs in alternative energy manufacturing, such as wind turbines and solar. Why isnt Manchin working to get such manufacturing jobs to locate in West Virginia instead of blocking even baby steps towrd reducing carbon emissions?

Some of us remember when it was used for central heating and I can't imagine ever going back to that. The fashion rule about no white after Labor Day or before Easter was made during the days of coal heat with the air full of fly ash and the sum dimmed by a foul smelling, low lying gray cloud.

(10,136 posts)have nothing to do with his constituents. Nor do the droughts and fires in the West, the floods and increased hurricanes in the Southeast, or the recent flooding of several NYC subway stations. West Virginia just sits there unaffected - until the revenues from the blue donor states dry up because of the impacts of climate change on their economies.

Nevertheless, without passing voting rights, Dems will not add any seats to make Manchin irrelevant, they will lose their majorities.

(2,223 posts)the "us versus them" tribal mentality, i dislike fencesitters even more, doubly so if they are doing from a "what's in it for me," or "how can i benefit from this" perspective. it would be one thing if Senator Manchin was in the position of not knowing all of the facts and trying to educate himself, but he's not. Granted he's not my senator, I'm blessed that moRon Johnson, but he seriously needs to look at the big picture: his dithering and dawdling might just cost us the Senate and then NO ONE will be happy because no matter what President Biden and the Democrats propose, no matter how many Americans it would help, Seantor McConnell and his merry band of troglodytes will just shoot it down out of hand.
Senate Manchin really needs to shit or get off of the pot. How he cannot see that a lot of the policies and proposed spending will benefit his state is beyond me. It seems he's sacrificing any chance he might have of being re-elected for some filthy lucre now from whatever dark money is feeding him. Honestly, I'd rather vote for someone who looked out for my best interest and the interests of others over and over... which is why I have never voted Republican... go figure.
