Sen. Joe Manchin, key Democratic holdout on federal voting protections, coming to Texas for fundrais

Source: Texas Tribune

WASHINGTON - West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin — a key Democratic holdout over efforts to pass federal voting rights legislation — is expected to head to Texas on Friday for a fundraiser with a host committee that includes several wealthy Republican donors.

The fundraiser comes just a day after Manchin met with Texas House Democrats on Capitol Hill who are desperate for his support of the congressional efforts which could preempt the statewide GOP’s push to pass bills that would restrict voting access for Texans.

Manchin is also one of two Democratic senators, along with Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona, who have proven to be obstacles to moving voting rights legislation through the U.S. Senate. At the center of the impasse is their opposition to eliminating or changing the filibuster, which requires 60 senators to put a bill on the floor.

“We invite you to join us for a special evening supporting our friend, US Senator Joe Manchin,” according to the invitation’s cover letter, which went on to call Manchin “a longtime friend since his days as Governor of West Virginia.”

I hope he realizes if he did that he'd immediately become a big ZERO. No more media attention, no more Koch money. The only one who would pay him attention is McConnell, twisting his arm to keep him in line.

We need to make some serious changes if one man in congress can obstruct like we've seen over the past several years. This is just crazy. Our government is fucking broken.

Is his fundraising with Republican donors?

(Edit: near the bottom of the article, it says it is being organized by energy interests that donate almost exclusively to Republicans, so I have my answer)

I’d say it’s pretty effing clear now. He’s a self-serving POS. When he votes with the Dems it’s because he thinks it’s good for him, not for his constituents, the party or even the country.

Manchin - I am deeply hurt by you actions. It definitely makes me feel that you are not aligned with the work we're trying to achieve with Voting Rights in GOP gerrymandered states. I have to ask what are your priorities because I have a hard time seeing how hobnobbing with Texas GOP donors advances anything productive.

he needs him on this voting rights carve out to the fillibuster, no ifs, ands or buts.

And, hey, Dems can always re-instate the filibuster in a lame duck session if they lose the majority in 2022. Between now and then, though, they can accomplish a lot.

Frankly, if I were in a position to spot a wavering CON, I'd be trying hard to recruit him or her to flip, too.

It's absolutely URGENT that we elect more Dems to the Senate. If for NO OTHER REASON than to deny him this ego-power base. He's Mr. King-for-a-Day right now, complete with cardboard crown and curtain rod scepter.

He’s made a calculated decision that the people in West Virginia who voted for him can go f**k themselves and is going to announce a switch in parties.

I have no proof of this. But I have sensed it coming for months. And now, with fascists inviting other fascists to come to a “special evening” to support their “longtime friend,” I think the handwriting on the wall is becoming bold enough for a blind man to read.

It is what it is.

Candidates should be allowed to raise money from folks who get to actually cast a vote in their election. If corporations have to be allowed to donate, then only the elections that apply to the headquarters. Not everywhere.
