Research: India's deaths during pandemic 10X official toll
Source: AP News
NEW DELHI (AP) Indias excess deaths during the pandemic could be a staggering 10 times the official COVID-19 toll, likely making it modern Indias worst human tragedy, according to the most comprehensive research yet on the ravages of the virus in the south Asian country.
Most experts believe Indias official toll of more than 414,000 dead is a vast undercount, but the government has dismissed those concerns as exaggerated and misleading.
The report released Tuesday estimated excess deaths the gap between those recorded and those that would have been expected to be between 3 million to 4.7 million between January 2020 and June 2021. It said an accurate figure may prove elusive but the true death toll is likely to be an order of magnitude greater than the official count.
The report, published by Arvind Subramanian, the Indian governments former chief economic adviser, and two other researchers at the Center for Global Development and Harvard University, said the count could have missed deaths occurring in overwhelmed hospitals or while health care was delayed or disrupted, especially during the devastating peak surge earlier this year.

(45,433 posts)1. No one trusts the government numbers from India
it is so politicized to make it appear that the pandemic is worse in liberal states that voted against Modi/BJP when it's probably the opposite. Conservatives there are claiming the liberal opposition is feeding fake news to the foreign press to make Modi look bad.

Not a surprise that the report comes from those in economic development entities there and here.
Thank you for posting this.

(111,251 posts)4. It's a crowded, hgh population country with most of its people
among the rural poor. I'd be shocked if they had an accurate count.
The US doesn't have an accurate count, either, too many of us are shut out of the health care system.
