She said anyone who wanted to become speaker should show a commitment to the Constitution and the rule of law, and he has not done that.
.................................
"The rhetoric we have heard from the minority leader is disingenuous," she said.
"The attack on this building on January 6th was the worst attack on this Capitol since 1814. It was an attack on our Constitution. The American people deserve to know what happened. The people who did this must be held accountable. There must be an investigation that is non-partisan, that is sober, that is serious, that gets to the facts wherever they may lead, and at every opportunity, the minority leader has attempted to prevent the American people from understanding what happened, to block this investigation.".........................
"I think that any person who would be third in line to the presidency must demonstrate a commitment to the Constitution and a commitment to the rule of law, and Minority Leader McCarthy has not done that," she said.

(50,949 posts)WILL come a time when every republiQan starts saying, "TFG? Hell no! I didn't vote for him! I'm not stupid!"
That's when Liz Cheney will become President.
I won't vote for her, but as we have seen, there are worse things.
She is a female in the republican party, who is not quiet or towing the line.
I suspect her political career is done. Republicans dont want anyone even remotely law abiding, much less female and outspoken. And Democrats arent going to be in line for her policy preferences.

(10,096 posts)Remember how many times we heard the word "pivot" about TFG? I was getting so sick of the word my stomach would turn, did he ever "pivot" to normalcy? The fealty to TFG is above all else.

(2,146 posts)(Check out Ike's policies - they are practically the same as the Dems today) and giving the repubs who are marginalized by the Trump nuts a focal point to regroup and hopefully drive the crazies out of the party. For sure, the old line Repubs are horrified by Trump and they want to save their party from going down in history as the party that destroyed America.
I think she can do it - she is smart enough to not make a move like this unless she knows she has backing. Her statement is perfect - it is real patriotism - country over party. While we have been saying this for years, for a Repub to say it has much more impact and it will pull out the Repubs who have been in hiding.
The best part is now the Trump nuts can't make this a Dem vs GOP thing anymore. And now we Dems can continue to say in concert with her that the present GOP is putting greed and power over country.

(21,432 posts)old line Republicans to regroup and get rid of the crazies.
But I would not compare her to Ike. She is far to the right of Ike. She is waging war over which far right faction will control the party. It's a turf war to determine which brand of oligarchy will hold power to control the nation. Cheney's side is protecting its domestic and foreign business interests against those of the Trump faction. Her faction needs control of national agencies to advance their own personal interests. It has nothing to do with protecting democracy. Her daddy served both Bushes, who equated democracy with unregulated capitalism and chose to bring "democracy" to the Middle East through wars intended to serve their own business interests.

(2,146 posts)the point is she is in a position to take control of the GOP away from the Trump nuts. If she can hold and amplify her position, she will wreak havoc on the Trump nuts. You can bet all those big time GOP donors who bailed when Trumpism took over, are all talking about how to get rid of the crazies..
And as they say "the enemy of my enemy is my friend."

(21,432 posts)Cheney to the committee. It's a good move to join forces with people who share a common enemy. But I also have no illusions either about what Cheney represents and what opposition her faction presents to us if she succeeds in defeating the Trumpist faction of her party.

(13,919 posts)Maybe there will be again someday, but it aint now, and theres NO guarantee, nor even convincinv evidence that its likely.
But shes in a position where shes lost the trump base either way, so she might as well position herself for something else hopeful, because the Qrump folk are set on punishing her, and even a straight Uturn to support him/them wouldnt save her from that.
When youve got no port in a storm, you might as well look for an fabled safe haven that there's no evidence for, because you dont have anything left to lose.

(17,199 posts)And that just gave me a crazy idea, when reQublicans start saying they never voted for him, I'm gonna say I did
and ask why they didn't support him. Answers will probably align with what we're saying about him right now.

They will probably still be sending people to prison for a full 10 years.
Also, once TGF goes, there is no one to pick up the mantle. They will once again fall into disarray.
I don't understand how people can't see this. The man is in his last years, has health problems, is facing prison, and so on. He's a temporary problem, but he is a big problem, mostly because our system isn't built for dealing wtih a psychopath attaining the presidency.

(17,199 posts)but the reQublican party as a whole doesn't seem able to break free of the grasp he has on them.
Kinda proves why we need to keep them in the minority, they are incapable of LEADING.

Liz Cheney has more spine than McCarthy and all his lackeys combined. All McCarthy wants to do is protect MF45. In doing that, the truth can't be exposed, so that's why McCarthy is making this the usual GQP dumpster fire.
Three cheers for Ms. Pelosi and Ms. Cheney. Two guardians of the Constitution and Truth.
