Pelosi says 'deadly serious' Jan. 6 probe to go without GOP

Source: AP

By MARY CLARE JALONICK

WASHINGTON (AP) — Unfazed by Republican threats of a boycott, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi declared Thursday that a congressional committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection will take on its “deadly serious” work whether Republicans participate or not.

The Republicans’ House leader, Kevin McCarthy, called the committee a “sham process” and suggested that GOP lawmakers who take part could face consequences. McCarthy said Pelosi’s rejection of two of the Republicans he had attempted to appoint was an “egregious abuse of power.”

The escalating tension between the two parties — before the investigation has even started — is emblematic of the raw partisan anger that has only worsened on Capitol Hill since former President Donald Trump’s supporters laid siege to the Capitol and interrupted the certification of President Joe Biden’s victory. With most Republicans still loyal to Trump, and many downplaying the severity of the violent attack, there is little bipartisan unity to be found.

McCarthy said Wednesday that he would withdraw the names of all five Republicans he had appointed after Pelosi rejected two of them, Reps. Jim Banks of Indiana and Jim Jordan of Ohio. Pelosi made clear on Thursday that she won’t relent, and Democrats mulled filling the empty seats themselves.

Why are the press treating Repukes as though they taking some kind of principled stand?

This is a performance of faux outrage. It's the only thing they have left. They have absolutely no policies, proposals or accomplishments to appeal to their diminishing base.

The press needs to stop acting like they are a political party. They are a bunch of criminal thugs trying to burn down the US government. And it's killing people.

There is already a Republican on the Select Committee and may be more before Pelosi is done.

She is not going to “go without GOP.” She is, however, going to go without McCarthy’s faux-outrage clown show.

That by turning a blind eye to Rep Cheney's actual status as a prominent Republican, and speaking as if there really are no Republicans on the committee, the press is accepting without comment that support for treason and insurrection is the defining feature of the Republican party today.

It does makes some sense when you consider that the House GOP dumped Cheney from leadership in favor of the far less ideologically conservative Stefanik. Cheney is as traditional a Republican as one could imagine — except for her opposition to violent insurrection, which has made her persona non grata in today’s GOP.

I'll bet Pelosi's team has already play the "if-this-then-we-do-that" scenarios far deeper than the GOP has the intellectual capacity to imagine on their own.

He Gish Galloped all over the screen, squawking about every single problem in this country except the attempted coup on 1/6. He gave a perfect preview of what he would have done to that commission, the only way they'd have been able to tolerate his presence is with a ball gag.

Cue screeching about partisan witch hunt, but McCarthy had ample opportunity to take it seriously and make sure there was fairness to his side of the aisle. He refused.

they sink deeper into the pit. It is constantly surprising to see what they have become. They have ceased working for the People, and are now devoting all their time to running away from discovery of their involvement in 1/6. It is just looking more and more like that's what this is all about. Two parts to everything they do: One, trying to retain power by preventing legal elections by legitimate voters, and two: trying to cover up their involvement in an attempted coup led by Trump. Pelosi will dig down into the muck and pull up those traitors that participated. And, I think she will tell us.
