CDC warns this is 'pivotal moment' in fight against delta variant

Top Biden administration officials on Thursday said that a hyper-transmissible variant of the coronavirus is posing new challenges for the nation’s health system, urging millions of unvaccinated Americans to get shots to protect themselves and their communities.

The delta variant, first detected in India, now represents more than 83 percent of cases circulating in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. People infected with the variant appear to carry a viral load that is more than 1,000 times that of those infected with earlier forms of the virus, allowing the virus to spread rapidly among unvaccinated people, scientists have found.

“The delta variant is more aggressive and much more transmissible than previously circulating strains. It is one of the most infectious respiratory viruses we know of and that I have seen in my 20-year career,” CDC Director Rochelle Walensky told reporters.

“We are yet at another pivotal moment in this pandemic, with cases rising again and some hospitals reaching their capacity in some areas,” Walensky added. “We need to come together as one nation, unified in our resolve to protect the health of ourselves, our children, our community, our country and our future with the tools we have available.”

4. Didn't we all know this would happen?

Especially in the red states. Lots of us mentioned how Trump supporters were going to get the virus. They were never shy about attending virus rallies unmasked. The governors of those states were adamant they weren't going to respond to the warnings about the virus. This was bound to happen. There could be no other outcome but the reddest states becoming giant incubators that kill by the thousands. I know I sound horrible, but it's fitting that the unvaccinated are the ones dying and many of them support the right wing machine that is killing them. It's horribly unfair that some of those unvaccinated are those who cannot be vaccinated. All I can do is shake my head in disgust.

they can do it the easy way (vaccines) or the hard way (infections).

6. Pissed Royally!

I am pissed royally! Because of them, I have had to cancel five international trips and at 75 I don't know how much longer I can travel comfortably and safely. They are limiting my life in the worst ways as I make huge efforts to have a social life and be with others! Building community is everything to me. After more than a years isolation I gave a big party for activists and am giving a neighborhood brunch outdoors. Just ordered 50 KN95 masks and cancelling great plans.

It is hurting many others in even worse ways. Imagine what this means for families with small children until we can get a childrens vaccine approved! I am so scared from my granddaughters! This is hurting us all!!! I like what Macron said: "We stayed home for you, this time it's YOU who must stay home!".
