Florida's COVID-19 surge continues; 60% jump in cases this week

Source: News4Jax

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Department of Health reported 73,199 new coronavirus cases in the week ending Thursday -- up 60% from last week’s increase and more than three times the number of new cases seen just two weeks ago.

The state is now averaging more than 10,000 new cases each day -- a level last seen near the height of the winter surge and before COVID-19 vaccines were widely available.

Duval County’s cases went up 6,430 in a week -- the second-highest increase since the pandemic began. The largest per-capita increases in the past week were in Nassau, Baker and Duval counties.

… snip …

About 5,300 Floridians are now hospitalized in Florida with COVID, a 65% jump since last week and nearly a tripling since June 14 when 1,845 were hospitalized, the Florida Hospital Association said. Officials have said more than 95% of those hospitalized were not vaccinated.

Note: On June 4, 2021, the Florida Department of Health began releasing reports on COVID-19 cases weekly rather than each day.

Edited to fix a story typo: it said “10” and should have said “10,000”

How many will die.

Just to be a stupid republican.

Some would rather die then admit they were wrong.

Many will die at home.

So damn unnecessary.

The hospitals are overwhelmed!
I know that Baptist Health made plans last year to open a facility to take the overflow, but on Thursday, I got an email from one doctor's office with this headline:
Significant Increase in COVID-19 - Apointment Cancellations.

...we are being asked by Baptist Hospital system to increase our physician coverage in the ICUs at the hospitals. Due to this increase we may be forced to cancel some clinics and reschedule your appointment to a later date.

I can live with a postponed office appointment, but my neighbor who fell and broke his hip 12 days ago is getting minimal care at Ascension St. Vinnie's. His wife is by his side every day, but she's hardly able to help in his care.

GOOBERnor DeathSentence owns this catastrophe, along with Mare Lemon Curry and the other Reich Wingers.

One solution. Moderna sends lots of vaccine directly to Walgreens. Walgreens sells the Special Not Government vaccine for $100 a shot.

In the most likely scenario, Lessler says, the U.S. reaches only 70% vaccination among eligible Americans, and the delta variant is 60% more transmissible.

In that scenario, at the peak in mid-October, there would be around 60,000 cases and around 850 deaths each day, Lessler says.

"By the time you get to October, these resurgent epidemics have burned through a lot of the people who are susceptible," Lessler explains.

At that point, "herd immunity starts kicking in a little more aggressively and we start to see things going down again." By January 2022, the model shows deaths coming back down to around the current level of about 300 per day.

The Florida graph is very interesting, a spike around Spring Break and a huge spike right now. You'd think somebody would rub De Satan's nose in it but I guess he got where he is by not knowing how to read a graph. Republicans like 'em stupid and obedient.

There are so many sites out there doing tracking but that one is pretty simple to use and lets you do overlay comparisons of metro areas...

Thanks for that!

That is Republican leadership writ large.

This man is doing his best to come to a White House near you soon and he doesn't care who he has to kill to get there. He is far more dangerous than Trump because he dresses well and doesn't do clown imitations, but make no mistake he is an evil fascist bastard.

New confirmed cases, about 1000/day. In June, 200 or so/daily. Daily death tolls in the world are up from about 1000/daily to almost 9000/daily (worldometer)

I have doubted that the virus is behind us. It is right with us, and doesn't care about politics, the importance of events, or how much better a live concert is.

Despite travel restrictions, Miami's been a favorite escape for right-wing Latin Americans - who presume they'll be safer there than in their own countries.

They also enjoy Flawrida's lack of mask mandates and movement/crowding restrictions, which have become commonplace south of the border as they struggle with the world's worst wave.

Well - the dominant variant in South America, since March, has been the Manaus - which has proven just as virulent (and deadly) as the Delta.

I suspect de Satan has told health authorities not to test and/or report Manaus, as they're finding it. As contagious as it is, it would be a miracle if there are no cases in Flawrida already.

GOP lying is the only thing that keeps that party afloat. Their problem is that COVID doesn't react to lies. It will come back and bite them.
