President Biden said that the federal government was considering making vaccines mandatory for its workforce what would be a significant escalation in push to expand vaccine coverage as the coronavirus surge from the Delta variant sends shockwaves through the country. Thats under consideration right now, he said in response to a reporters question at an appearance Tuesday. If youre not vaccinated, youre not nearly as smart as I thought you were.
There are at least 4 million federal employees, a figure that includes civilian workers, members of the military, and members of the U.S. Postal Service, according to recent estimates, making the government the countrys largest employer. It could not be learned if the discussions about vaccine requirements would also apply to members of the military. The news comes after weeks of waning vaccination rates, despite its wide availability and the swelling number of caseloads across the country.
Public health experts say they are extremely concerned by the sharp rise of cases from the Delta variant as the appetite for restrictions and closures from the pandemic have eased. Many workplaces such as private offices and federal agencies have begun to explore the process of reopening for the first time since the pandemic began in 2020, a process now thrown into peril by the new risk of the variant and the countrys large pockets of unvaccinated people.
Many companies have avoided vaccine mandates, opting instead for guidance urging or recommending the vaccine. But the tide may be turning. The Department of Veterans Affairs, which runs hospitals and clinics around the country, announced on Monday that it would mandate coronavirus vaccines for more than 100,000 frontline healthcare workers, making it the first federal agency to do so.

(128,960 posts)I don't think there was ever any mandated vaccines when I started years ago (now retired).
I suppose due to recent legislation that involved public health with the Bioterrorism Act and some other statutes post 9/11, it could maybe be an E.O. But otherwise it would probably have to be legislated. The military can mandate - but only for (fully) "approved" vaccines and that mandate is for obvious reasons considering their occupations.

(10,872 posts)While it is a long stretch from "Joe says" to real current genuine policy, I do like the idea.

... Anybody not willing to get vaccinated (unless for valid medical reason) at this point is clearly GQP and need to be purged anyway.

(12,586 posts)You know it's going to be done anyway. It's GOT to be done, and done now! You know that every day you postpone getting more people vaccinated means more people are going to die that wouldn't have to. You're the commander-in-chief. If you pick up the phone and order the Joint Chiefs of Staff to get their troops vaccinated it will be done. You're the head of the executive branch. Write an EO requiring all federal employees, contactors and suppliers get vaccinated. Hold a conference call with your Cabinet secretaries and tell them to get their employees vaccinated. Use your bully pulpit and call all of the governors -- even the Republicans -- and encourage them to perform their patriotic duty -- hell, tell them that Republican voters are dying -- and require state workers, contractors and suppliers to get vaccinated, and offer whatever help they need (can't FEMA be involved?) to get their state vaccinated. Suggest they contact community leaders to help convince the "vaccine-hesitant" to roll up their sleeves.
Tell the television and cable networks to support this effort, or else . . . (Let them use their imaginations to figure out what the "or else" is.)
Quit "studying," "contemplating" and "evaluating" something that clearly must be done to end this pandemic.
Just f*cking do it!!!
