US on track to see 200K daily COVID-19 cases, former CDC director says

Source: The Hill

The U.S. is on track to see 200,000 daily COVID-19 cases in the coming weeks, the former U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention director told CNN.

"We're heading into a rough time. It's likely, if our trajectory is similar to that in the United Kingdom, that we could see as many as 200,000 cases a day," Tom Frieden said on Monday.

*snip*

The jump in cases is due to the delta variant that has swiftly made its way across the states and caused significant case increases in areas with many unvaccinated individuals.

The case count could quadruple in the next four to six weeks due to the variant, Frieden said.

CNN... - With the Delta variant pushing US Covid cases back up, fully vaccinated people are wondering whether they need to start masking indoors again. Covid vaccines remain extremely effective against the worst outcomes of the disease -- hospitalization and death -- and breakthrough infections remain uncommon.

> But the health community's understanding of the coronavirus, its variants and vaccine efficacy has evolved with the virus itself, and this new guidance is based on new information..

- What's the new guidance?
Children and adults in K-12 schools should wear masks, regardless of vaccination status. Period.
Vaccinated Americans should wear masks indoors if they are in high or substantial transmission areas.
The CDC wants local leaders in high transmission areas to support vaccination and universal masking.

- What guidance hasn't changed?
The unvaccinated should always have been wearing masks in public, according to the CDC. Everyone who can should get vaccinated.

- 'New science leads to another CDC update on masks. Even for the vaccinated.

July's positive COVID test rates are 7 times higher than June's, Texas Medical Center says
More than 1,000 people are testing positive per day for COVID-19 in the greater Houston region, more than seven times last month's daily average, according to the Texas Medical Center.

As the delta variant dominates new COVID-19 infections across the country, the Texas Medical Center is returning to daily coronavirus updates.

The takeaways, sent every morning from William McKeon, president and CEO of the Texas Medical Center, provide a glimpse into one of the world's largest medical complexes as its clinicians treat infected patients. Previously released weekly, the switch back to daily missives illustrate how rapidly delta is spreading across the region.

Last week, an average of 1,069 people tested positive per day for COVID-19 in the greater Houston region, more than double the prior week's daily average.
