Florida county to require masks in schools, defying DeSantis
Source: The Hill
A Florida county school board voted on Wednesday to require students, staff and visitors to wear masks inside its schools, directly conflicting with Gov. Ron DeSantiss (R) stance that schools should not impose mask mandates.
The School Board of Broward County held a special meeting on Wednesday where members voted to require indoor masking inside schools, social distancing protocol inside classrooms and seating capacity limits on school buses that would be implemented at the beginning of the school year, which starts in August.
According to WLRN, the move was made due to school board members concerns over a rising number of COVID-19 cases in South Florida and in light of guidance recently issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that recommends even the fully vaccinated again wear masks inside in COVID-19 hot spots.

Florida mayors defy DeSantis with mask, vaccine mandates
Masks will again be required at indoor county facilities in Floridas populous Miami-Dade following new federal guidance recommending that even people vaccinated against COVID-19 should wear facial coverings. And in Orange County, home to Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando Resort, the mayor went a step further and announced all 4,200 nonunion county employees will be required to get their first coronavirus vaccine shot by the end of August, and the second shot by the end of September. Disney World announced on its website Wednesday evening that beginning July 30, face coverings will be required for all guests ages 2 and up while indoors and in Disney buses, monorail and Disney Skyliner, regardless of vaccination status. This includes upon entering and throughout all attractions. Face coverings remain optional in outdoor common areas.
Setting a precedent for the whole country. DeathSantis and maskholes are going to luv this.

(1,957 posts)Yesterday, I heard numerous school board superintendents state they would go to court if DeSantis tried to call a special session to pass a law to try and take their authority away. The State would have no legal leg to stand on.

(10,050 posts)We are a pocket of blue down here in South Florida and especially in Broward & Miami-Dade we have to just push through all the crap DeSatan tries to inflict on us and do what we have to do to survive. Even though our vax numbers are decent (over 70% in Miami Dade and over 60% in Broward) the Delta variant is still scaring the hell out of us!

(3,951 posts)them off as Mom said so. Man, that would make great theater for the 6 o'clock national news, eh?
Kids in cuffs being thrown into a paddy wagon. Great scene for sure. Go Florida.

(3,048 posts)Everybody...especially schools & businesses, need to start standing up to these asshole governors. I mean really...who the hell are they to decide what a private company can and can't do when it comes to this stuff? And while public schools are not a private business, why should they be hotbeds for spread of this because he's an idiot Trump-humper? These guys are nothing but bullies, and like bullies everywhere, they crumble when faced down. What's he going to do? Arrest the school board members? Send goons into schools to rip masks off kids?
This last surge is making some people see the light. We should have been passed this by now. And the results are so black and white, they can't be denied. When 98% of new infections & deaths are unvaxxed, it's come into focus. WE'VE done the right thing, and I'm tired of listening to those morons bleat about their "freedom". I have absolutely no problem masking up again, but I'm all in favor of a vax card...show it, or prepare to be tested everywhere you go. If you don't like it, stay home.

but I can read.
Every time, everywhere that we've "opened up", relaxed mask mandates whatever - our numbers of infections and deaths climb.
Not just North America -
EVERYWHERE!
If indeed Momma Nature is trying to get rid of us - our greed and stupidity is sure to assist her.
I'm fully vaccinated (Pfizer) but I still mask up, avoid people and places where they don't,
and am more vigilant than ever as I see spikes occurring not just here in North America,
almost everywhere
