Carl Levin, Michigan's longest serving U.S. senator, dies at 87
Source: Detroit Free Press
Carl Levin, a liberal Democrat who rose from a prominent Detroit family to become Michigan’s longest-serving U.S. senator and helped set military priorities and investigate corporate behavior for decades before retiring in 2015, died Wednesday. He was 87 years old. The Levin Center at Wayne State University's Law Center put out a statement late Wednesday, saying, "With great sadness and heavy hearts, the (center and family) announce the passing of Senator Carl Levin." Levin disclosed in his recently published memoir, "Getting to the Heart of the Matter: My 36 Years in the Senate," that he was diagnosed with lung cancer nearly four years ago, when he was 83. A defender of Senate traditions, even when his own party moved to change them, Levin, who was trained as a lawyer, twice served as chairman of the powerful Armed Services Committee, despite having never served in uniform himself. . . 4. He was one of my early political role models.
I was very lucky to have him as one of my senators for almost 27 years (from when my family moved to Michigan until he retired).
A true public servant who always respected regular people. |

10. A great man for the whole country
He was fearless in the face of corporations and a military that wanted to keep secrets. He used his power for the benefit of all. RIP Senator Levin.

16. I just spotted this wonderful tweet from PA State Attorney General Josh Shapiro, re: Levin

My first job in public service was answering phones for Sen. Levin in 1995. I learned so much just listening to him ask questions. He was kind to all and never forgot where he came from. A true mensch. May Carl’s memory be a blessing. Levin Center @Levin_Center With great sadness and heavy hearts, the Levin Family and Levin Center at Wayne Law announce the passing of Senator Carl Levin – a dearly beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle, and life-long public servant. https://law.wayne.edu/levin-center/pdfs/cml_statement_two_pages_final.pdf Image 10:13 PM · Jul 29, 2021 R.I.P.
