Health experts fear COVID case explosion after Lollapalooza

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by JudyM (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

Source: Fox 32 Chicago

Earlier this month, an outdoor music festival in the Netherlands resulted in more than 1,000 COVID cases. Like Lolla, concertgoers were required to be vaccinated or show proof of a recent negative test. But unlike Lolla, the tests had to be performed within 40 hours of the festival.

"So there's a lot of concerns that one, we allowed 72 hours before with a negative test for Lollapalooza, two, most people are not wearing masks, and three, they're very close and going to be singing and screaming and enjoying themselves, but we know the delta variant much more contagious," Dr. Jain said. "There's a lot of concerns we're going to see significant spread from this event even though it's outside."

A consortium of researchers working with the CDC projected the nationwide surge will likely peak in mid-October. Dr. Jain does not disagree. She says the answer is simple: vaccinations!

"So if we're not able to get more people vaccinated, we can continue to see the surges," she said.

there's also a Garth Brooks concert next week in KCMO which is restarting an indoor mask requirement at Your Name Here Field At Arrowhead Stadium, I'm sure these were planned before the rise in breakthrough cases and they don't want to issue refunds

1. The Loop is completely inundated during Lollapalooza

It's not just the festival itself, it's that the trains and buses are INSANELY packed, they're swarming into every Walgreens to get last-minute supplies, they're filling bars and restaurants, and there isn't even space on the sidewalks. There will be afterparties, both official and not. There will be people needing medical help because of heat exhaustion, dehydration, drugs and alcohol. This happens EVERY year, and Chicago can handle it, NORMALLY.

This year? I think it's a baaaaaaad idea and they should have cancelled it.

It starts next Friday, so some people are already on their way there (they're coming from all over the country by motorcycle so 1 week travel time isn't out of the question).

It's a boulder rolling downhill already. Nothing can stop the impending disaster now.

It's not "simple". It's mask up too even if you're vaccinated.

We were able to just barely slide the "Wawa Welcome America" July 4th thing in (with a slower spike in cases so far due to the vaccinations and timing of it). But I am concerned about an event that we have here in Philly yearly around Labor Day - "Made in America", which is a multi-day outdoor set of concerts (the event was created by Jay-Z). It's scheduled for September 4 - 5 (was cancelled last year).

they have to muster enough self-control to mask and social distance for the 4 or 5 week period the whole process will take. It's looking like all the people with that much self-control already got themselves vaccinated.

covid is raging.
I guess 2% death rate is now acceptable. Not a big price to pay for being able to attend mass gatherings.

The forum hosts’ consensus is that this should be locked since it is reporting on worries about what might happen, as opposed to being important breaking news.

We are allowing your second post about the event to stay in LBN since it reports on the event, itself: https://www.democraticunderground.com/10142777524 for further discussion on this event.
