A Texas GOP leader railed against vaccines and masks. Then he died of covid.
Source: Washington Post
A leader of the Texas Republican Party hopped on Facebook in May to post about a mask burning party 900 miles away in Cincinnati.

The month before, Apley responded to what Baltimores former health commissioner was heralding as great news clinical trials showed the Pfizer vaccine was effective at fighting the coronavirus, including one of the recent variants, for at least six months.

And on Friday, the 45-year-old Dickinson City Council member republished a Facebook post implying that vaccines dont work.
Two days later, Apley was admitted to a Galveston hospital with pneumonia-like symptoms and tested positive for coronavirus, according to an online fundraising campaign. He was sedated and put on a ventilator.

(15,478 posts)One is tempted to hope his death was horrid, in hopes those who survive him may see the error of their ways. But I'll settle with hoping whatever death he experienced provides the same impetus to the rest.

(13,292 posts)My favorite quote from Frank Herbert's book, Dune, is the Litany Against Fear:
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

My favorite quote: The concept of progress acts as a protective mechanism to shield us from the terrors of the future. You can tell I am not a big fan of heroic pathos. This is what I like about Dune: Herbert;s villains are as compelling as his heroes, and his heroes are as flawed as the villains.

Clarence Darrow. Not Mark Twain said this. And it fits. I dont wish anyone ill, but enjoy a moment of schadenfreude when Karma runs over these dogmatic people using a strong case of irony

(1,910 posts)Yup, confirmed by photos. #1 risk factor by far for anyone under 65. 99% of these people who they show who died who are relatively young are obese.
Being obese and unvaccinated is absolute lunacy.

(21,267 posts)One would think, for the safety if his young child and so he could watch that young child grow up and be there for them as they grow up, that he would have swallowed his pride and gotten the vaccine. He could have gotten it secretly if he was worried about damaging his REPUBLICAN bona fides.

(3,744 posts)This scares the crap out of me. I am vaccinated, but I'm overweight and have certain thyroid issues. That this infernal virus can take yo over and kill you in less than a week is just plain scary.
The guy had a small kid, and a wife, and none of us should take joy in his death. (Frankly, if he was single and childless I'd feel differently.)
But again - outside of the vaccination discussion - it is unknown exactly which way you'll go if you get this thing.
I'm vaxxed, and I mask my ass off at work and in public. Still...

(23,350 posts)when people died, I felt really bad for them and their survivors, because Covid-19 was new and not clearly understood.
Now, a year later, attitudes and comments like this are ridiculous. Many Covid-19 infections will be less horrific and many deaths are preventable because scientists worked around the clock to make a vaccine.
I said it a month ago, and even if it is ghoulish, I'll say it again: if people don't step up and get vaccinated, I think there will be fewer swing states in the next election cycle.
