TOKYO (AP) Nagasaki on Monday marked the 76th anniversary of the U.S. atomic bombing of the Japanese city with its mayor urging Japan, the United States and Russia to do more to eliminate nuclear weapons.
In his speech at the Nagasaki Peace Park, Mayor Tomihisa Taue urged Japans government to take the lead in creating a nuclear-free zone in Northeast Asia rather than staying under the U.S. nuclear umbrella a reference to the U.S. promise to use its own nuclear weapons to defend allies without them.
Taue also singled out the United States and Russia which have the biggest arsenals by far to do more for nuclear disarmament, as he raised concern that nuclear states have backtracked from disarmament efforts and are upgrading and miniaturizing nuclear weapons.
Please look into building a nuclear-weapons-free zone in the Northeast Asia that would create a non-nuclear umbrella instead of a nuclear umbrella and be a step in the direction of a world free of nuclear weapons, Taue said as he urged Japans government to do more to take action for nuclear disarmament.

(46,340 posts)If there ever is another nuclear weapon used in war, it'll be between India and Pakistan.
Just about every year those two get to fighting over their borders, and some of their troops are killed or injured.
Even North Korea isn't stupid enough to use the nukes they have, they are mostly just like the ones China, Russia, and the US have, weapons to be lusted after, or negotiated over, or waved around in saber-rattling.
Obviously, the worst-case scenario is a terrorist group like Al-Qaeda or a right-wing militia group here in the US having one.
But for now, non-nuclear weapons are still just too damn effective for terrorist groups.

Here in NYC the Hibakusha -the Japanese A bomb survivors visited several times over a few years during The UN's big yearly gatherings
Also in ?'70 I was one of the minority of people in the US who visited a first time traveling exhibit of
Atomic Bomb Artifacts from Japan.
The infamous iconic Stopped Clock (at time of the explosion).
Photos of survivors wirh extreme keloid scars.
Most haunting was a piece of Wall embedded with the Shadows of People that were near it because the explosion's light was so intense it acted like a photographic surface. 😔
