Frail-looking Robert Durst denies killing best friend

Source: AP

By ANDREW DALTON

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A frail-looking Robert Durst struggled to hear his attorney as he took the stand at his murder trial - in a wheelchair, not a witness chair — and denied killing his best friend two decades ago.

Durst, 78, looked extremely feeble and strained to speak Monday as his attorney, Dick DeGuerin, took the risky move of calling a murder defendant to testify.

“Bob, did you kill Susan Berman?” DeGuerin said to open the testimony of the New York real estate heir.

“No,” Durst answered.

New York real estate scion Robert Durst, 78, answers questions from defense attorney Dick DeGuerin, left, while testifying in his murder trial at the Inglewood Courthouse on Monday, Aug. 9, 2021, in Inglewood, Calif. Durst is charged with the 2000 murder of Susan Berman inside her Benedict Canyon home. He testified Monday that he did not kill his best friend Berman. of those old mafioso 'Dons' who would come to their trials in wheel chairs, with tanks of oxygen, attending nurses etc. just for the theater of looking too old and frail to be guilty of anything.

Maybe I have it all wrong. Maybe he's very I'll and frail. It's merely an observation.

But more immediate questions presented themselves to startled observers. Was it the air of his homeland which revived the frail old man on his return after 503 days of detention in Britain? Or could it be that he had hoodwinked the doctors whose report gave Home Secretary Jack Straw humanitarian grounds for his return?

The Pinochet who flew home in triumph was very different from the frail old man who arrived in Northwick Park Hospital in a wheelchair two months earlier for an examination by a team of medical specialists. He had to be helped into bed and have his hearing aid checked.

Human rights organizations have claimed a Chilean naval psychiatrist had been staying in England with Pinochet since last August and that she had coached him on how to fail the tests.

You know he killed her and it's not his first or even second murder. He killed his first wife and his neighbor before killing Susan Berman and admitting it on tape. He has killed multiple people and gotten away with it because he is white and rich. Being frail does not preclude him from being convicted and spending the rest of his miserable life in prison, where he belongs.
