With Mississippi Hospitals Near Calamity, Gov. Reeves Left State For GOP Political Event

Hospitals and healthcare workers need you to help us, Neshoba General Hospital CEO Lee McCall tweeted desperately at Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves yesterday as COVID-19 continued to overwhelm the states least vaccinated county. Where are you?
The answer, Arizonas governor inadvertently revealed, was that the Mississippi governor was once again out of state. He was attending a Republican Governors Association meeting just one day after the state health officer announced that no intensive-care beds remained statewide. Mississippi Todays Adam Ganucheau also reported that Reeves was attending the RGA event yesterday.
Excited for day 2 at @The_RGA 2021 Candidate Conference to continue discussing whats next for our nation and the importance of conservative principles with our future leaders, Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey tweeted yesterday. He attached a photo showing GOP governors seated in a conference ballroom, with Reeves visibly seated on the right side of the podium.
Meanwhile, Neshoba Countys hospital was overflowing with patients and, according to McCall, he and hospital workers were all at our breaking point. Meanwhile in Jackson at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where there is no longer enough staff to tend to all patients in need of ICU treatment, officials were asking the federal government for help setting up a field hospital in the medical centers parking garage.

(48,955 posts)No reason one had to leave the state amidst a critical emergency. Either the GOP Gov/Candidate Conference is to callous, or doesn't have the competence to at the last minute create a virtual alternative for those whose responsibilities for running their state during an escalating conference, Or Tate (and any other in attendance if their state is surging) just doesn't really have concern for the health/safety/lives of his constituents. Or all of the above.

(14,628 posts)I talked to her this morning and she said Reeves is intentionally hiding cuz hes catching shit from both sides. She thinks hes in trouble politically and wont be re-elected. Apparently the pubes are mad at him too for not being more forceful about masks. They want him to follow Abbott and DeSantis and stop municipalities from implementing mask mandates, but he wont go that far.
The bad news is if he isnt re-elected, some other redneck asshole will take his place. The repubes never seem to run out of horrible candidates.

(108,429 posts)Rising Covid-19 cases and hospitalizations in Mississippi are pushing death rates higher across the state, according to the state's health officer.
"We're going to see a lot of deaths in coming days, it's just inevitable," Mississippi State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs told reporters on a briefing call Wednesday.
Covid cases have soared in Mississippi over the last month, jumping almost tenfold from a seven-day average of 267 new cases per day a month ago to 2,640 as of Tuesday, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. Deaths, while still relatively low, have similarly risen from a seven-day average of about 3 fatalities per day a month ago to more than 13, the data shows.
The states hospitals are getting crowded with Covid patients, which are taking up roughly 47% of the state's available ICU beds, according to data compiled by the Department of Health and Human Services.

(111,437 posts)People who are still in the trenches are about at the breaking point. I think we're getting near mass walkout territory in some of these states with wimpy GOP figureheads in the top job who refuse to stray from Facebook orthodoxy and a huge number of hellfire and brimstone preachers who are telling the "saved" that they'll go to hell if they get a vaccine.
I knew Covid was going to be a disaster for this country that dwarfed the problems in other countries. I just underestimated the sheer number of frightened and gullible people. I also didn't realize right wing ranters would start a slick and cynical campaign to disinform those people so the economy would stall and make Biden look bad.
I'm tired of this, stop this country, I want off.

The other day I was told that the reason COVID is so out of hand it because of all of the COVID infested immigrants that the President is letting into the country.
Huh?
These people will stop at nothing to gain power regardless of the price to be paid which includes their own lives.

The white Republicans hate them they way normal people might hate cockroaches.
White Mississippi Democrats, however, are some of the most progressive and articulate you'll find anywhere. They've seen the hate up close and personal.

(51,651 posts)The state is at a crisis level as far as hospitals are concerned. This is a GQP plan to win over voters?!?! 56% of Americans believe there should be mandatory vaccines. Why is the media giving so much publicity to the minority of voters? Fuck this shit!

(4,555 posts)Re: Mississippi Hospital system reaching failure:
This catastrophie is politically-created. The Gov and Republican pols in general are responsible for not telling their constituents the honest to God truth. And failing to tell them to be responsible adults and listen to science and experts and doctors. To wear a mask, to get vaccinated.
I can probably hazard a guess that the majority* of Mississippi residents believe in small gubmnt.
They want their freedumb and they want the gubmnt to leave them alone.
But, now that they are completely overwhelmed because of their sheer stubborness regarding masks and vaccines, they cry for the gubmnt to come in and rescue them.
They want small gubmnt, until they dont.
If Joe Biden treated Republican states like Trump treated Democratic states, then Mississippi would be ridiculed, threatened, and basically hung out to dry. That is the overwhelming difference between Republicans and Democrats. Dems dont turn people away. Republicans walk away and tell people to pound sand.
Shaking my head.
*If anyone here on DU is from Mississippi, I apologize. Please note I said Majority, not all residents. I know there are plenty of progressive Democrats in the state that hate this situation. I am not talking about you.
