North Carolina hospital network fires around 175 staffers for not getting vaccinated

Source: MSN/NBC

A large North Carolina hospital network says that it has fired nearly 200 workers for failing to take a Covid-19 vaccine.

Dr. David H. Priest, chief for safety for Novant Health, said at a Tuesday press briefing that roughly 175 staffers did not comply with their vaccine mandate deadline.

"By doing that, by not getting vaccinated, they voluntarily resign," Priest said.

The departures will not impact staffing at the hospital system of over 35,000 employees, Priest said, because the hospital has been using temporary staff for the duration of the pandemic to make up for shortages from staff falling ill with Covid.

David Priest was quoted as saying they "voluntarily resigned". That they were "fired" was MSN/NBC's wording, from my reading of the article.

1. Priest is a member of management.

He is using the term "voluntarily resigned" in an attempt to contest unemployment. It won't work. They were fired.

2. Still, I think being fired for not vaxxing is an automatic disqualification from UI

3. Totally depends on the state.

Some states yes, some states no. There have been no rulings yet.

4. North Carolina says no, apparently.

ABC11 reached out to the North Carolina Division of Employment Security Commission (DES) on how it is handling claims involving the COVID-19 vaccine and received the following response:

"People who are fired or quit their jobs because they refuse to follow their employer's vaccine requirement should not expect to receive unemployment benefits. Every claim is different, and the Division of Employment Security determines eligibility on a case-by-case basis by considering the facts and circumstances of the claim."

9. I don't see either as being negative. Honestly... FIRING them outright is a big positive (IMHO.)

6. And those 175 staffers will have a hard time getting a similar job elsewhere..

I don't know of any health provider of any significant size (in NC) that doesn't have a vaccine requirement. Cone Health (my wife's employer), Wake Forest Baptist, UNC, Duke... all require vaccinations including Covid.

7. They never believed the paychecks would stop

Do they have replacements? I could see there is a downside.

8. I'm sure some of the unvaccinated are Republican/Nazis who are happy to lose their jobs

and become martyrs.

10. Good!

No unemployment for these ass-hats either. They decided to not obey the rules of the private company. They are on their own.

12. That's about 0.5 percent of the hospital network's employees

Probably most of those fired unvaccinated were planning an exit anyway.

So, what it comes down to is that only 0.5 percent are the bathsh*t crazy Trump worshipers. They are the lunatics and racist who are the natural constituency of the GOP and Trump. All the rest of the idiots who vote for the GOP are feeding into lies and manipulation.

15. You're leaving out an important attribute of that group

They are also ultra-right Evangelicals. They quite literally worship Trump, but they mix all of their anti-vaxx sentiments with "the Lord will protect me" nonsense.

21. The way the good Lord protected me was by having people capable of making vaccines ...

... I thank G*d for the vaccine, leaders like Biden/Harris and Dr Fauci and the CDC.

14. Maybe they can work at my local pizza shop who keeps running a help wanted ad with the following

"We do NOT require a Covid Vaccination- in fact we will not even ask you if you are."

this saddens me as I have been getting their pizza for decades but I live in a 99.9% repuke area.
