Washington Dr. Anthony Fauci, chief medical adviser to President Biden, said Sunday it's too early to say whether Americans should avoid larger family gatherings for Christmas, while the nation experiences an uptick in new COVID-19 infections among children alongside lagging vaccination rates.
In an interview with "Face the Nation," Fauci said it's "just too soon to tell" whether holiday gatherings should be limited for the second year in a row due to the ongoing pandemic, but said Americans need to focus on lowering the number of new infections and hospitalizations.
"We've just got to concentrate on continuing to get those numbers down and not try to jump ahead by weeks or months and say what we're going to do at a particular time," Fauci told "Face the Nation. "Let's focus like a laser on continuing to get those cases down. And we can do it by people getting vaccinated and also in the situation where boosters are appropriate to get people boosted."
The country hit another grim milestone in the coronavirus pandemic, surpassing 700,000 deaths from COVID-19 on Friday. But the surge of new cases, hospitalizations and deaths driven by the highly contagious Delta variant appears to be slowing.

(2,343 posts)Fauci's opinions will not factor into my family's plans this Christmas, any more than they did last year. Work schedules are the most important consideration.

(9,647 posts)Barring the emegence of a vaccine-resistant strain, or family members that cannot get the vaccine or are otherwise at increased risk (immune compromised), I would not have any reservations about getting together for Christmas.

(2,343 posts)So please tell us if vaccinations don't work. Otherwise, we're gathering.

(12,813 posts)We are staying home again this year. Actually we enjoyed it last year, no drama from either family. I prefer going off holicay, less stress and baggage to deal with. My husband's family will be the problem, mine will be fine knowing I am a high risk person and am trying to protect myself. I have not been approved for a booster yet, I got Moderna. My husband actually told his sister it was not a given we would be there for Thanksgiving or Christmas, she did not take it well I don't think.
My husband is in enough danger teaching in a state that won't allow a mask or vaccine mandate. I don't need him in contact with a brother in law who loves Trump.

The fear has subsided somewhat due to vaxxed state of family, but the case count has not 😕
