Sen. Susan Collins floats GOP support for a debt limit hike in exchange for Democrats abandoning Bid

Source: Business Insider

Biden's $3.5 trillion social spending plan

Sen. Susan Collins of Maine suggested some Republicans would back a debt limit hike if Democrats abandoned the $3.5 trillion social spending package containing the bulk of President Joe Biden's economic agenda.

On Monday, she suggested that "some Republicans would vote to raise the debt limit if they knew the Democrats were going to abandon the $3.5 trillion package, which appears unlikely but that's an agreement that could be reached."

The Maine Republican echoed Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and urged Democrats to raise it unilaterally through reconciliation. It's the same maneuver the party is using to approve their hefty social spending plan relying on only Democratic votes and bypassing unanimous GOP opposition.

Democrats aim to expand Medicare and Medicaid, ensure families can access and afford childcare, add four years to public education with universal Pre-K and tuition-free community college, and renew monthly cash payments to families in their spending plan.

Someone should put in ONE LINE, that eliminates the debt ceiling and be done with it.

I keep hearing in the media that the Democrats are going to get blamed but if you hold a vote every day and the pugs say no every day, then how can you get blamed? The media is obligated to report the results and if they do their job then it should be obvious. This isn't rocket science.

I really can’t stand her. A long time ago, when Olympia Snowe was still in the Senate, Collins actually did seem tempered. But it has been many years since she could be considered a moderate.

I wouldn't take Collins' deal as it stands, but it may be easier to peel off someone like her or Romney or Murkowski with some specific enticements.

My political memory doesn't go too far back. Is there an instance of that happening?

We had an election and Republicans lost so it is really selfish to think that you still get to call the shots. And this coming from the woman that believed Kavanaugh that he would not vote to overturn Roe v. Wade because of Stare Decisis. This is a woman that cannot be trusted to stand by any kind of deal. If she fears the fallout of Republicans being blamed for shutting down the government then she need to make those concerns know to Moscow Mitch in no uncertain terms. I'm not holding my breath.

40. A counter offer

Office of the Majority Leader
Senate Office Building
Washington, DC 20021

Dear Senator Collins,

Thank you for your constructive proposal in offering Republican support for lifting the debt limit. The proposed exchange of Democrats abandoning the President's domestic agenda in exchange is thought provoking and completely consistent with Republican values.

I wonder what part of the "Build Back Better" legislation troubles you so. Is it the fact that it is a means to distribute the bounty of our wealthy nation to the poor and middle classes? Is it the unfamiliar concept of providing benefits to citizens that are fully paid for by revenue increases and operational efficiencies?

While intriguing in it's bravado, I can not forsee a time when this proposal will be acceptable to the American people. Perhaps a counter offer should be considered: The bill to allow the treasury to pay the bills ALREADY authorized by the Congress and several Presidents be approve by UNANIMOUS CONSENT. It can be the first step in your party's return to governance rather than obstruction.

I am returning your proposal via Senate page. I believe that the modifications to this offer are best accomplished internally...That is, in the confines of your lower colon. By rolling the document tightly, it can comfortably be inserted via your rectum.

Sincerely,

Chuck Schumer
Majority Leader

The story of Solomon and the two women who claimed to be the babies mother. Essentially the GOP is willing to potentially kill the country to prevent Biden from passing his economic agenda.

Why not add raising the debt ceiling into his bill?

Are we supposed to fall for this again??? How many times has she pulled this bullshit? When Reid was running the Senate, she kept dangling that damn carrot on a bill for veterans, making him go back and tweak it a few times because it just wasn't quite right enough for her to vote for. Then when she got everything she wanted, she still voted against it because "he took too much time". Are we supposed to fall for this AGAIN? Fuck her.
