McConnell offers extension on debt limit into December
Source: Reuters
WASHINGTON Top U.S. Senate Republican Mitch McConnell on Wednesday said his party would support an extension of the federal debt ceiling into December, a move that would head off a historic default with a heavy economic toll.
That could provide an off-ramp to a months-long standoff between President Joe Bidens Democrats and McConnells Republicans, who were expected to block on Wednesday a third attempt by Senate Democrats to raise the $28.4 trillion debt ceiling.
To protect the American people from a near-term Democrat-created crisis, we will also allow Democrats to use normal procedures to pass an emergency debt limit extension at a fixed dollar amount to cover current spending levels into December, McConnell said in a statement on Wednesday.
The Wednesday afternoon procedural vote is intended to allow the Senate to begin debating a bill that would suspend the debt limit until December 2022, after elections that will determine control of Congress for the next two years.

(21,405 posts)This is why the GQP wanted Dems to raise the ceiling under reconciliation, the key words, fixed dollar amounts. Here we go again with spending on the poor and working class must be offset with cuts elsewhere. Bring the debt ceiling up for a clean vote but make GQPers actually filibuster it, and televise it on TV. Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, I wish I were Chuck Schumer or the person who prepares Schumer's statements.

(46,082 posts)This shows he's not willing to let the government default. If he were, he would have let it happen now. I think we've won a game of chicken, at least for now.

(5,157 posts)I think that is all it is. Who will blink first? DO the rethugs really want to allow all their control to lapse as the federal government stops functioning? How would all those rethugs grifters milking massive government contracts get paid? Yes, it was a game of chicken. But isn't politics in general little more than a 'game' to these people?

(14,648 posts)He says it with a perfectly straight face. Too many people in this country are frighteningly ignorant of how things work and can only digest the soundbites that the M$M lets out. You can bet this one will be repeated ad nauseam on all the channels for the rest of the week.

(14,648 posts)I can't say what I hope will happen to that rat turd. He has done nothing but weaken the country with all his shenanigans. And, of course, the idiots who support TFG call all this "winning" as they rattle around in their rusted 70-something pickup trucks full of confederate flag and "lock her up" bumper stickers when they could be doing so much better if republicans never had power to do anything again.
While we're at it, fuck the MSM for not calling out all his lies. I'm so sick of this shit!

(15,657 posts)Without this deal, the debt ceiling would surely have been written into the reconciliation bill and passed before the Oct. 18 deadline, and then the bipartisan bill would have passed soon after that.
I think Mitch is hoping to diminish the momentum on the reconciliation package and deny Biden a win.

(21,405 posts)raising the debt ceiling under reconciliation, never going to happen. If that were to happen any proposed spending would have to be offset by cuts elsewhere. GQPers got their tax cuts they don't want to spend money on the working class and poor.

(21,405 posts)Democrats have a winning hand, all that is left is to turn over the cards. Make them show their cards, make them actually filibuster.
