Judge: Sentence in Capitol riot case should send message
Source: AP
A federal judge said Friday he hopes a three-month sentence behind bars in a U.S. Capitol insurrection case will send a message to other defendants who dont seem to be truly accepting responsibility.
U.S. District Judge Thomas Hogan spoke as he sentenced Robert Reeder, a Maryland man who had originally described himself as an accidental tourist before video emerged of him grabbing a police officer.
Its become evident to me that many of the defendants pleading guilty do not truly accept responsibility. They seem, to me, to be trying to get this out of the way as quickly as possible, stating whatever they have to say ... but not changing their attitude, Hogan said.
He said he believed Reeder is sorry now and sentenced him to half of the six months prosecutors had wanted, but the judge said some of Reeder's previous statements had been disingenuous and self-serving. Hogan said he hopes the sentence sends a signal that people convicted in the riot will face jail time.

(17,526 posts)We need a judge that will order the criminal dragged from the courthouse, tied to a lamp post and shot by six sharpshooters. Now that would send a message that right-wingers would understand.

(11,096 posts)despite video evidence he assaulted a police officer. I am not as concerned with the sentence as the lack of felony conviction.
I suspect that between the delays in the federal courts with Covid restrictions and the number of 1/6 defendants, the prosecutors are trying to clear the docket. I understand the problem but suggest that the wrong defendants are reaping the benefit. I would much rather see the 1/6 defendants rigorously prosecuted than some nonviolent drug offender.

(11,096 posts)Years ago, when I was an Army trial counsel (prosecutor), I was a bit of a hard a$$. My rule was to always charge every offense I could ethically and drop any I could not prove or that I needed to drop in a plea deal.
In my defense, it was easier to drop a charge than to add one.

(8,910 posts)why should they be allowed to sentence anyone?
3 months is nothing.
A Capitol Policeman complained that sentences are less than the time
he's spent recuperating from 2 surgeries from injuries he received on 1/6.

(6,265 posts)these idiots are laughing at their jail time for treason. If all these insurrectionists had been POC and demonstrating against say...racism. Many, many would have been slaughtered on 1/6 and those facing justice for an insurrection would have been in jail on 1/7 and facing prison in a supermax bigtime...
