McConnell: GOP should move past Trump's "rehash" of 2020 election

Source: Axios

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) told reporters Tuesday that Republicans should be looking to "the future and not the past" when asked about how comfortable he was with the GOP "embracing" former President Trump.

Why it matters: CNN's Manu Raju posed the question after Trump attended a GOP retreat last week, noting that McConnell had said the former president was "morally responsible for provoking the events" on the day of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, per Business Insider.

What he's saying: "I think the American people are focusing on this administration, what it's doing to the country," McConnell replied.

He added that he hoped the 2022 midterms would be a referendum on the performance of President Biden's administration, "not a rehash of suggestions about what may have happened in 2020" — an apparent reference to Trump's continued false claims about his election loss.

It's fascinating. What is Biden doing "to the country"? Jeez. I just can't figure it out. I know what he's doing "for the country."

Mitch is throwing noodles at the wall. He has no idea what to say, so he says Biden is bad. Hell. Mitch sure isn't advancing any... what?... policy, is he? Whatever Biden is doing, we're Republicans, so what he's doing is bad. I guess that crap works in Kentucky.

I am so...so...so upset.
The only mature way to handle Mitch's apostasy is for Republikkans to stay home on election day for the next 7 years to show Mitch how horrible he is speaking

10. It's not a rehash of 2020. It's a first look at January, 2021.

Moments after voting to acquit Donald Trump of the impeachment charge, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said Trump was "practically and morally responsible" for the deadly Capitol riot. Still, he said conviction would be unconstitutional.

On the Senate floor, McConnell suggested Trump could be liable in civil and criminal court for his alleged actions and said the vote "does not condone anything that happened."

He should have waited for the VA election. He's taking a chance that Trump blows the whole thing up.

The English version of what McTurtle said would be:

"We tried everything, and Joe Biden is still President. Since we couldn't dislodge him the quick way, we have no other alternative than to try what we did to Obama. It's slower, but still effective."

Mitch, you and Q need to keep feeding the wacky rightists! I like seeing their street-corner protests, even if their numbers are shrinking because the weather is turning.

You are doing a fine job of showing the wacky-right end of the Repub party that they are different from, and better than, the centralist Repubs. Keep up the fine divisive work.

18. Dems should do everything they can to keep T**** triggered and focused on 2000.

If they put out a steady flow of books about how TFG lost the election, with titles like, "LOSER," "How T**** Lost an Easy Win," "I REALLY WON, and other lies," "Without Putin's Help, **** Lost in 2000," and "He Can Win 2024 By Himself," "The Stolen Election," "T**** Won In a Landslide," etc., he will never, ever let go the 2000 election.

Oh, don't forget the best seller, "The Donald: Never a Billionaire"

Throw in a couple of documentaries, a docu-drama called "Falling Down, The Real Story of the Final Days of the T**** Presidency," an article or three in the NYT, and a steady flow of pundits talking about how he's past his prime, how MAGA has grown past him, and some such, and he'll stay wound up like a whirling dervish, sucking all the air out of the room.

That ought to keep the GQP in permanent damage control mode.

Oh, BTW, once he declares himself a candidate for 2024 Twitter will probably unlock his account. Throw me into that briar patch!
