A Black girl was arrested at school in Hawaii over a drawing that upset a parent

Source: MSN

The American Civil Liberties Union of Hawaii is demanding policy changes after a 10-year-old Black girl was arrested at school over a drawing linked to a "run of the mill" dispute among children.

In response to the incident, the ACLU sent a letter Monday to the Honolulu Police Department, the state Department of Education and the state attorney general's office asking them to adopt policy changes, expunge all records of the arrest, and to pay $500,000 in damages for "harm and suffering" caused by their agencies.

In January 2020, a parent called the Honowai Elementary School in Honolulu to complain about the drawing made by the girl and demanded the staff call police, the ACLU said.

I'd like to know the charge: Painting while black. Depicting bullying while black? Not recognizing where society will always put you while black?

The parent demanded the school call the police, and the school did it? Sue the department, the school, the principal, the officers for excessive force and refusing a minor child access to their parent. . .

Liberty and justice for all?

I have not read anything about the specific content of the drawing. Perhaps extremely violent. Regardless it’s still doesn’t justify what the school and police did.

7. How is it so easy to get a black child arrested or shot. And while doing nothing ...

... violent or illegal.

Her free speech was arrestable but my neighbor's "fuck Biden" banner near an elementary school is fine.

The cops who inspired the work, all got off. How's that for irony. No charges.

I heard a piece about the Ahmaud Arbery murder trial, that the police charged Arbery for walking in the middle of the street, after he was dead, laying there. The fix was in from the start. Thank G*d it was thwarted.

Considering that very young kids have been suspended for pointing their finger in the gun shape not much would surprise me.

If only the teacher had taken care of the bullying. The only reason to see the drawing is if one believbes there was any drawing the child should be arrested for. Of course, the bully's parents complained and the school and entire justice system jumped.

10. Sounds like this was a case for calling in a school

counselor or psychologist, not police. Schools are too often using police for classroom discipline instead of handling discipline themselves.

Even if the sketch depicted violence and was seen as a threat, it required discipline and counseling, maybe even suspension, but not police and an arrest of a 10 year old child, especially not without her parents being notified.
