Dr. Phil sued after teen alleges she was sexually assaulted at a Utah ranch he promoted: reports
Source: USA Today
A woman has alleged she was sexually assaulted at a rural ranch in Utah after appearing on the long-running TV show "Dr. Phil." She is now suing Phil McGraw, commonly known as Dr. Phil, and Viacom CBS for negligence, saying she felt pressured to attend the facility after appearing on the show.
The faculty where the alleged assault took place is called Turn-About ranch, which is located in the rural town of Escalante, Utah. The lawsuit was filed in the Los Angeles County Court and in the suit, Hannah Archuleta alleges after she appeared on Dr. Phil in October 2019 she was 17 at the time McGraw and his staff pressured her to attend the ranch to have any chance at a good life, according to a lawsuit obtained by the Los Angeles Times and The Wrap.
Archuleta says her family was pressured to force her to go to the ranch where the alleged assault took place. In the lawsuit, Archuleta says that within weeks of her arrival she was groped twice by an unnamed male staffer.
In the lawsuit, Archuleta says McGraw made unqualified, positive representations about Turn-About Ranch, which is a working cattle ranch that bills itself as a special place that provides a unique set of services to struggling young people, according to the ranchs directors message.

(6,017 posts)...and is McGraw invested in the place? This all sounds too much like Christian Boot Camp for my comfort.

(7,875 posts)A number of these so-called Christian oriented work farms have had accusations and prosecutions. It seems the old testament style boot camp/ prison work farm model lends itself to such abuses, along with dubious hiring and supervision conditions.

(27,464 posts)can not say his recommendation makes him liable for this alleged assault. If someone recommends a restaurant and I'm assulted in the ladies' room, I'm not going to sue the person who recommended the place to me. What am I missing here?

(9,888 posts)I can't stand Dr. Phil, but how is this on him? Unless this place was known to be a hot bed of rapists, I'm not seeing his liability. You aren't missing anything.
