A potentially faster-spreading Delta variant, AY.4.2, has been spotted in 8 states
Source: CBS News
A potentially faster-spreading "sub-lineage" of the coronavirus Delta variant named AY.4.2 has been spotted by labs in at least 8 states, and health authorities in the United Kingdom say they are investigating a growing share of cases from this strain of the virus.
Labs in California, Florida, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nevada, North Carolina, Rhode Island and Washington state, plus the District of Columbia, have so far spotted at least one case of AY.4.2.
While it may spread somewhat faster, health authorities have not found evidence of more severe illness caused by the variant, and they say current vaccines remain effective against it.
The sub-lineage has remained a small fraction of circulating cases in the U.S. for several weeks, but American health officials say they are already ramping up efforts to study the new Delta variant descendant.

(25,292 posts)Coming at a time when things across the country seem to be easing with respect to Covid and with the relaxation of masking requirements and talk of getting back to normal.
We've been here before. We push the button too fast to attempt to get back to some normalcy - and what happens?
This pandemic rears its ugly head and hits us again with a vengeance.
And at the seasonal point of the year - Thanksgiving Holidays, Christmas and New Years - travel season - where spread comes easy.
Haven't we learned our lesson yet - and why can't we wait and have some patience with the easing of restrictions - until we know for sure that this pandemic is behind us.
We can't be that far away from maximum vaccinations and possibly a herd immunity.
Why are we again rushing to say it's over?
Will we ever learn?

(129,843 posts)Not here in Philly. We re-implemented the indoor mask mandate back in August and it's still in place today (with no end in sight yet).
Meanwhile none of the surrounding/rim counties here have such and the local media is wringing its hands and scratching their heads wondering why, if those rim suburban counties are supposedly "more vaccinated" (percentage-wise) than the city (we are actually 66% 12+ fully vaxxed here), their positivity rates are all much higher than Philly's (we were reporting under 3% as of last week and the others are running from 5% - 8% positivity).

(4,170 posts)Researchers have done a pretty good job of tracing the origins of this virus to bat communities in a complex of caverns in a remote area of China. The leap from bats to humans in Wuhan is still a bit fuzzy, but probably involved a second species of animal as an intermediary agent. From Wuhan the virus and all its variants can be traced and mapped as they spread to other parts of Asia, Europe and the Americas.
The virus has been found in China as early as fall of 2019, but there's no evidence it appeared significantly earlier there, much less anywhere else in the world.

All the other vaccines have been a piece of cake. Feeling like I do is bad enough, but add to it all the 'news' about how terribly Democrats are doing makes it even worse.

(4,170 posts)Psaki was vaccinated, and the continued negative tests imply that her viral load was really light, so light that it's difficult to get enough virus by swab to confirm the infection.
