Supreme Court justices lean toward expanding right to carry a concealed gun in public

The Supreme Court's justices, citing the "right to bear arms" in the 2nd Amendment, sounded ready Wednesday to strike down laws in New York and California that deny most gun owners permits to carry concealed guns in public.
Most of the justices said people who live in "high-crime areas" and fear for their safety should be allowed to carry a gun for self defense. And they said this applies equally to people who live in cities as well as in rural areas.
Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. pointed to "ordinary, hard-working people who work late at night in Manhattan" and are "scared to death" as they head home. "How is it consistent with the core right to self defense" if they are denied a permit to have a gun with them, he asked.
Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh agreed. If people say, "I live in a violent area, and I want to be able to defend myself," the 2nd Amendment suggests they have a right to carry a gun for self defense.

(7,807 posts)IMO very few people in this world know how to carry a gun and how to use it effectively. The obvious would be law enforcement officers, military combat veterans, and people who take the time and the initiative to get properly trained.
Only a tiny portion IMO get the training and experience necessary to defend themselves. Some people cannot afford that training or find a qualified instructor in their community.
Others think hitting a paper target is all they need to "be qualified." No paper target I've ever shot at has shot back, and there lies the rub.
That's why I think combat veterans, for the most part, have the entire scope of experience. Very few others do.
How many cops in an entire career have ever been in a gunfight? A tiny percentage, I would guess. Most NEVER.
Also, it is not a fact just found in movies. Every year gun owners are killed with their own guns.
Having the gun is the easy part.
Here is a quick example.
Several days ago, my neighbor asked me if he could borrow my truck to pick up some lumber.
Sure I said I'd get the keys. I handed him the keys and asked if he needed an extra hand. Nope just getting a few sheets of plywood.
He took the keys, walked over to the truck, and climbed in. He sat there for a few seconds, got out, a started walking back to me. I said it's a big gray key, thinking that was the problem. He had the keys had access to the truck has a driver's license.... so what was the problem? It was a 4-speed standard transmission; he never learned how to drive a standard.

That's why we want a collapse. That's what we elect republicans for.
Putin needs all the help he can get. We need more Kyle Rittenhouse types to shoot others.

(2,971 posts)Green = No permit required to carry a concealed weapon
Dark Blue = Permit automatically granted (unless one is prohibited person such as a felon)
Only a handful of states make it difficult to legally carry a concealed weapon.

(93 posts)I'm actually not that concerned about people carrying concealed, provided that:
1. They have a permit
2. The permit requires them to have training to operate said weapon, and be of sound mind.
More worrisome than concealed carry are the dicks who open carry. That to me strikes me as more attention seeking than the average Joe who has a concealed permit and actively avoids trouble.

(1,666 posts)You know how the police know they cant legally stop people from filming them, but just ignore that time and time again and assault people for filming them without any real consequences?
Take that for how this will go down in places like Chicago. Legally carry and still get arrested for it. This will absolutely require a reminder decision or declaration from SCOTUS.

(4,544 posts)Its our Wild West mentality, the me culture, and lax constitutional enforcement that has led us down this path. To call us a civilized nation when every prick needs to walk around with his or her masculinity strapped around his / her waist like a dildo, is a joke on our citizenry.
It seems we want to cling on to the Constitution as it was written until its inconvenient for us. This lunacy needs to stop. We are in sharp decline as a nation, as we will witness in the next few years. I for one dont need every dickhead with a gun running around after the shit hits the fan like the little punk Rittenhouse, but its a stark reality.

(1,666 posts)But we have that problem as well.
Example:
Declaring a certain class of weapon to be a weapon of war that only belongs in war and is for mass murder, then devising legislation that bans said weapon of war from everyone but the same police protested for killing people; the same police also do not work in a war on a battlefield and also do not have mass murder in their job description.

(4,981 posts)For gun ownership and carrying permits, SCOTUS says to gun owners, sure, go ahead do what you want. And the states are not allowed to have tighter stricter laws.
But, for womens rights:
Roe V Wade is still in existence. But, states are locking down rights to an abortion. And SCOTUS seems to be OK with that.
Cant have it both ways
Well, you CAN, but not in a sane world.
And I dont agree that states can curb rights the way they seem to be allowed to on many things.
Heck, I guess a lot of laws need to be re-written to please my logical way of thinking.
In State A, god forbid you want no-excuse absentee ballots. In State F, they have been doing it for years. Same thing goes for other rights as well. Just tired of the patchwork of our laws and the whole states rights thing. Seems to me that the phrase states rights is really a misnomer. Often times, they are actually taking AWAY peoples rights when going from the Federal to the State level. And the end result is that the residents of the state have less rights and freedoms.
I believe in laws the make sense and protect. Laws that further the idea of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness that extends to the end of the persons nose.
To think that SCOTUS is going to tell NY to loosen hand-gun restrictions is frightening me. I live in a red area and people LOVE their guns. Last thing I need to see is people walking around WalMart in their sweatpants and Crocs along with a concealed pistol. I can just see them slipping around in the snow covered parking lot, taking a nice faceplant and having their weapon discharge because it was loaded, and the safety was off.
