Federal lawsuit accuses NRA of making illegal campaign contributions through shell companies to Hawley, Trump, others
Last Updated: Nov. 5, 2021 at 10:11 p.m. ET

Suit filed on behalf of Gabby Giffords’s nonprofit names Hawley and Rep. Matt Rosendale as defendants and also accuses the NRA of ‘excessive and unreported in-kind contributions’ to the campaigns of the former president as well as Sens. Thom Tillis of North Carolina, Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, Tom Cotton of Arkansas and former Sen. Cory Gardner of Colorado

O’FALLON, Mo. (AP) — A federal lawsuit accuses the National Rifle Association of violating campaign finance laws by using shell companies to illegally funnel up to $35 million to Republican candidates, including former President Donald Trump, Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri and others.

The Campaign Legal Center filed the lawsuit Tuesday in Washington on behalf of Giffords, a gun-control nonprofit founded by former Democratic U.S. Rep. Gabby Giffords. It accuses the NRA of practices dating to 2014 “to evade campaign finance regulations by using a series of shell corporations to illegally but surreptitiously coordinate advertising with at least seven candidates for federal office.”

The lawsuit names as defendants Hawley and U.S. Rep. Matt Rosendale of Montana, but the text of the lawsuit also accuses the NRA of “excessive and unreported in-kind contributions” to the campaigns of Trump and Republican Sens. Thom Tillis of North Carolina, Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, Tom Cotton of Arkansas and former Sen. Cory Gardner of Colorado. The contributions to Rosendale were during his unsuccessful 2018 Senate campaign, according to the lawsuit.....................................

1. NRA spent millions to keep Ohio Sen. Portman in office (2016)

Nov 2021

During the 2016 election, the National Rifle Association and its donors gave Sen. Rob Portman’s campaign $9,900 — a drop in the bucket of the $25 million Portman raised and an argument against the notion that the gun rights group had “bought” the support of the state’s junior senator.

But three other numbers are also worth considering: $242,708; $1.55 million and $3.06 million.

******

And it was mostly Russian money too.

The Trump "community" seems to understand how that works, but I sure can't figure it out.

I thought I also read where they gave Trump over $200M. Maybe I'm getting senile.

10. OK, so now he's in effect automatically disqualified from running for president, right?

because we wouldn't want such an out-and-out crook in the Oval Office, right?

Right?

Of course, this budding fascist knows no shame, so will continue to try to weasel his way into the presidency.

He's on the radar of the great Charlie Pierce as the frontrunner for becoming the first openly fascist American President:

However, he’s found the track he’s going to run on and, along about December of 2023, I suspect that I will be reading in one of our top newspapers about how Josh Hawley “brilliantly weaponized male insecurity” to take the lead in all the polling coming out of New Hampshire. On that, I will make book.
