US budget deficit eases to $165B in October, down 42%

Source: AP

By MATT OTT

The U.S. monthly budget deficit fell in October as the government collected more taxes from individuals and corporations thanks to a much improved economy emerging from the coronavirus pandemic.

The Treasury Department reported Wednesday that the federal government posted a deficit of $165 billion last month. That was 42% lower than the same month last year when it rang up a record October deficit of $284.1 billion. At that time revenues were declining while spending to deal with the impact of the coronavirus soared.

This October, the first month on the government’s calendar for fiscal 2022, spending fell 14% from last year to $449 billion, while revenues rose 19% to an October record of $284 billion.

Treasury officials said Wednesday that the lower October deficit this year was attributable to more tax revenue from millions more people back working, and booming corporate profits as the economy reopened. Last October, there were still no vaccines and many businesses suffered as people remained holed up at home.

ABC and a couple of others have stories posted on it. Nothing from Fox news or CBS.

I'd expect it to be mentioned prominently by evening anchors at MSNBC.

Not expecting the TV Corporate paid hosts nor their regular parade of posturing guests to say more than a couple words before they're off with the late breaking drama of the day. With a bit of Dem & Biden negatives thrown in too.

They all get their paychecks from the same place.

these kinds of things need to be touted by Dems to show progress and improvement, but we seem to have a perpetual messaging problem.

appoint at least one House member from each state to serve as communications liaison with local media and other local structures. be available. hold town halls and televise them. be a newsmaker.

circulate talking points for every elected person with a (D) after their name weekly, hell, even daily. you don't have to repeat every word, but don't be a hermit and hide from your constituents.

latch onto some local issues and get out there.

don't be a fucking coward and stand up for democratic principles. don't let lies proliferate without forcible repudiation.

if the media fucks you over, seek out other media to get your case out there.

don't be a double-dealing hypocrite

lots of things
