Defense lawyer in Ahmaud Arbery murder trial seeks to have Jesse Jackson removed from court

Source: Reuters

(Reuters) -A lawyer for one of the three white men charged with murdering Ahmaud Arbery, a Black man, in their southern Georgia neighborhood failed in an attempt to have the judge remove civil rights leader Rev. Jesse Jackson from the courtroom on Monday.

The same lawyer, Kevin Gough, made a similarly unsuccessful attempt last week to get the court to prevent any more "Black pastors" attending the trial after Rev. Al Sharpton, another civil rights leader, was seen sitting with Arbery's parents in the public gallery.

After the jury was sent out, Gough stood and said he objected to what he called "an icon in the civil rights movement" sitting next to Arbery's mother, Wanda Cooper-Jones. He said the presence might influence jurors.

"How many pastors does the Arbery family have?" he said, referring to a similar objection he had made to Sharpton's visit. "The seats in the public gallery of a courtroom are not like courtside seats at a Lakers game."

It goes all the way back to pre‐Civil War days when the enslavers were always living in fear of a possible slave revolt. Some of the enslavers' descendants seem to still be terrified of the descendants of their ancestors' former slaves.

The judge said it was odd that Gough kept objecting to Black pastors showing up and that he was "done talking about it."

"At this point, I'm not exactly sure what you're doing," the judge said. "It's almost as if you’re just trying to keep continuing this for purposes other than just bringing it to the court's attention and I find that objectionable."

That judge did a great job of pointing out the racist assholery without having to come right out and say, "You, counsel, are a racist asshole."

Some seats are reserved for family, press, VIPs (like Jesse Jackson). I doubt Jackson had to endure a line or a crush of the hoi polloi who just wanted to see what's going on. The prosecutor arranged for his seat, to influence the jury and to annoy the defense.

I don't know that his presence helps or hurts anyone.

I am quietly making exit plans.

They already excluded all but 1 black juror (all perfectly LEGAL as the judge pointed out due to our "august" Supreme Court rulings).

Then let's not mention the fact that just 50-60 years ago, crowds of armed white mobs would show up at this very courthouse demanding accused black defendents be turned over to them for "justice". Pretty sure that was never argued as "intimidating".

But here is what I find particularly depressing. On the off-chance that these murdering racists are convicted, there will be a parade of talking heads explaining how that proves how "our country has changed", as if one stroke of justice wipes out centuries of evil.

I want to stay and fight, but I am pretty sure the election of a racist, ignorant, evil moron was the final, fatal blow.

This country is fucking over. Might as well play with the deck chairs on the Titanic as the band plays.

Much as it breaks your black little heart to hear it. The public has a right to witness a trial, unless the judge determines it is detrimental.
