OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt commuted the death sentence of condemned inmate Julius Jones on Thursday, just hours before his scheduled execution. Jones has proclaimed his innocence from death row for more than two decades in the 1999 killing of a suburban Oklahoma City businessman.

Stitt commuted the 41-year-old Jones’ death sentence to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. He had been scheduled for execution at 4 p.m.

“After prayerful consideration and reviewing materials presented by all sides of this case, I have determined to commute Julius Jones’ sentence to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole,” Stitt said in a news release.

to exonerate him and finally get him released. It's great progress especially when the alternative was execution.

Won’t this give him the opportunity to try and find a way to get a new trial and/or prove his innocence?

Much more Jesusy than most repubs. But it took millions of liberal Godless baby eaters to make him follow Jesus teachings.

But given there are serious doubts whether Mr. Jones committed the crime in question he deserves a new trial at minimum.

It seems more than a little cynical to decide not to execute the guy because he might be innocent, but then make sure he never gets his life back, either.

The Europeans tell a joke about three black guys in an American prison. One says he got thirty years. The other two ask what he did. He said he stole a bicycle. The second says he was in for twenty years. The other two ask what he did. He says he stole a box of cereal. The third one says he is in for fifteen years. The other two ask what he did. He says he didn’t do anything. The other immediately tell him to stop bullshitting them, because everybody knows that if you didn’t do anything, the sentence was only ten years.

The Browns QB (played at Oklahoma) has been very vocal about this. I saw his name in an article earlier today.

I used to be in favor of the death penalty until it dawned on me that if you wrongfully incarcerate someone, you can compensate them for their time. But if you wrongfully execute someone, I'm not aware of any way we have to restore them.

A Repuke actually had a conscience, and one from a death penalty state to boot. This gives Jones a chance to be fully exonerated.
