DOJ indicts two Iranians for interfering in 2020 presidential election
Source: The Hill
The Department of Justice (DOJ) on Thursday indicted two Iranian nationals for allegedly interfering in the 2020 U.S. presidential election, alleging they used wide-ranging cyber and disinformation efforts in an attempt to sow doubt in the election process.
Between August and November of last year, Iranian nationals Seyyed Mohammad Hosein Musa Kazemi and Sajjad Kashian are alleged to have targeted election websites of 11 states, successfully obtaining information on more than 100,000 U.S. voters by compromising one state's voter information website.
They then allegedly posed as members of the "Proud Boy" organization to send emails to thousands of registered Democratic voters, including some of those whose information was stolen, threatening them unless they voted for now-former President Trump.
The two individuals also sent Facebook messages and emails posing as Proud Boys to White House officials, Republican members of Congress and news organizations claiming that the Democratic Party was attempting to exploit election infrastructure vulnerabilities and change votes, the DOJ said.

(2,022 posts)I guess they were working against Trump, by trying to "pressure" people to vote for Trump and pretending to be Proud Boys.

(1,568 posts)but rather exploiting whatever they can in order to sow discord in American politics in general. So, not so much an attack on republicans or democrats, but rather an attack on America as a whole. After all, how much does US foreign policy change from one party or the other? Adversaries are considered adversaries whether it's a democrat or republican president. From their perspective it's mostly the same. At least that's my impression of how it might be working. But as usual, I'm just some idiot on the internet.

(14 posts)Yes, our votes are at risk. 2 Iranians hacked voter data. Easy-peasy for China, Russia, etc.to do same maybe? Everyone's privacy data is at risk via websites and linked computers anyway. Facebook has it, NSA, China, on and on. Data abuse is the new capitalism. In the end, your money is constantly at risk, and the corporate structure just raises interest rates and price of goods, or get bailouts from the government (from taxpayers) or the egregiously do their own frauds of get sued and drag their cases through appeals for years, then settle for negotiated penalties that are a pittance of their gains (and remember, that would be devalued dollars due to inflation.
And in the end, money in this new capitalism is merely a current of 0s and 1s to be channeled, legally and illegally.

(2,022 posts)At least in my state, voter registration data is public and available on the web. This includes which elections you voted in, and which party's primary you voted in.

Furthering the growing divide in this country and the othering of political opponents. Iran is a hostile foreign nation and they will laugh happily if citizens are waging war on each-other. Iran is just one of many, not to mention the domestic true-believers.

(7,534 posts)I contend that unfettered political spending has had the same effect and worse since the Citizens United ruling and this has opened up an entire new world of rat-fucking. Bottom line IMO is pretty draconian...we should ban political discourse on social media and the MSM for thirty days prior to elections.
