'It's Coming': N.Y. Gov. Kathy Hochul Issues Omicron Warning, Declares State of Emergency
Source: Newsweek
New York Governor Kathy Hochul has declared a state of emergency over the Omicron variant of COVID-19, stating, "It's coming." The variant is believed to be possibly more contagious and immune-resistant than previous COVID-19 variants. "We've taken extraordinary action to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and combat this pandemic," Hochul wrote in a statement. "While the new Omicron variant has yet to be detected in New York State, it's coming." The state of emergency will allow officials to more quickly acquire critical supplies for combatting the pandemic, Hochul's declaration said. It will also allow the state Department of Health to limit non-essential, non-urgent procedures for hospitals and healthcare systems with limited capacity. This way, they can focus on caring for those most needing treatment for COVID-19. The emergency protocols will take place December 3, and will be reassessed based on the latest COVID-19 data on January 15. 5. Well, that's one benefit of living in NY,
although my vax and mask resistant area acts more like a Midwestern red state.
Infections are so high here now that I was planning on hibernating between Thanksgiving and the weeks after New Year when they will increase even more. Add Omicron to that and I think I will need a hazmat suit to stay safe. |

I guess time will tell.

9. I thought Delta would be weaker but the death counts seem to indicate otherwise
And yeah the unvaccinated are the cause of that, but we went through the variants prior to Delta with no vaccines so it still seems to have been worse by my basic math.

21. Variants that establish themselves have something going for them.
If the original COVID-19 dropped you in your tracks and a variant came out that left you walking around for a couple of weeks, it would be the more effective spreader and would become dominant. Problem was, the original was already really good at spreading and variants (if there were any) that were less lethal had no reproductive advantage, never became dominant, and faded away.

11. They are saying nothing about lethality, which is either pretty good or really bad
![]() Death trails infection, so we prob just don't have good data on it - with cases just being seen since Nov 11 or whatever, but it is strange how there's this big near panic about the transmission and mutation, but almost nothing on mortality. |

12. I am very upset
About the normal emergencies: auto accidents, Heart attacks, strokes, that won't get the usual excellent/immediate care they desperately need because the non mask wearing assholes and un-vaccinated idiots are usurping the staff and hospital ERs.........
I have to believe this is already happening all across America, and will only get worse if we have another surge from this new mutation. (They use the word "variation" only because it sounds so much nicer than what it is....a "Mutation'.....) |

14. It is being reported that nurses are bailing out, some Dr.s also
Some of them say they were pushed to their MAX last winter, and are not going to repeat that again. Especially because of the Anti-Vaxers and non-mask wearing jerks who demand far more care than the ones who have gotten vaccinated and are masking.....
If this truly does explode again, there will be Doctors, Nurses, First responders bailing out like never before.......and also teachers. |

stupid fucking demanding assholes - I cannot imagine what it would be like to be tasked with taking care of their sorry ass, considering their lack of respect towards the medical folk by refusing to get a simple shot, UGH

27. Strict triage.
Very end of the line for these fuckers. Put their asses in a tent in the parking lot and deal with other cases first. Saw a story this week where a pediatric cancer patient who was running a high fever had to wait in the car for hours because the ER was full.
There’s an old saying that I have used quite often. “Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part.” Only I’d replace “planning” with “common sense, courtesy, and respect”. I’m done with these people. They’re a huge reason why this will never truly be “over”. |

I bet it isn't easy in practice - these folks have family, and it affects them too. I resent that these anti-vaxxers put medical folk in that position, for sure.

39. For a while,
I tried talking reason to them. Early on, I realized it was utterly and completely useless. This started during the Cheney/Rumsfeld administration. I slowly but surely started weeding them out of my life entirely. It accelerated during the Trump Occupation.
I got rid of all of my Republican friends/acquaintances. Flat out dropped them. Many were life time friends. One Couple was like family since I was 11 YO, (sixty years). The husband would forward to me all the racist, vile Obama emails.....Incredibly, he was jewish and his grandparents died in the holocaust. I sent him one last email: You do know that the racist scum who sent you this for forwarding, hate the Jews far worse than blacks or mexicans.........He animately denied it........So, I told him to send a return email to whom ever sent the email to him, and state: Please do not send emails to me on Friday or Saturday, because I am usually at the synagogue on those days, and see what happens..... These people all had one thing in common. Watching FoxNews and listening to RW radio 24/7 and nothing else........ Completely and totally brainwashed.............. |

and we would discuss issues, each of us respecting the other's opinion. Often, we would find a common ground or solution we both could agree with.
The current Republicans are OBLIVIOUS to anything and everything except them being able to parrot Republican talking points. It is absolutely mind boggling...........and by design, I might mention........ I am old, but most days I talk to my Son and his wife, or some of the kids. I worry constantly for their futures. I tell him go to Canada, Australia, or anywhere but get the hell out of the U.S........... (Did you know that Australia and some other country have banned Fox News from the country!??????) |

The triage nurse, sends all antivaxers to MASH type tents in the parking lot, and they are cared for by antivaxer caregivers.....
And antivaxers should be required to wear a colored emblem, shaped like the Coronavirus any time they are in public. Oh, we could go on and on with these kinds of fantasies....... Any other things that you all would love to see ?????? Be careful, you don't want to get censored by DU........LOL |

that tells me the mutation is probably already here. Pfizer and Moderna are doing studies to see if their vaccines even work against the new mutation.
I have been sounding the alarms for months about how everyone acted as if the pandemic was over when we are having 1,200 deaths a day. I have tickets for Ford Field in Detroit for NCAA wrestling finals in March. I am having my doubts if the event will even happen by then or if it does will I go? |
