Source: The Hill
The shooting occurred at the MCRD's main visitors entrance shortly before noon local time when a vehicle attempted to enter the base at its gate 5 checkpoint, according to a local San Diego news station, Fox 5.
Employees from the base asked the vehicle to stop, but the person exited their vehicle and allegedly approached the employees with a knife, Fox 5 reported.
MCRD officials said the person had hostile intent, and the person was shot by base personnel after being given several warnings, Fox 5 added.

(12,449 posts)during my career in the Marines, I did a 2 year stint with the Marine Security Forces and this is exactly how we were trained to take down someone with hostile intent, we were trained not to physically engage someone with knife, if they refused to drop the knife, we dropped them.

(12,449 posts)we were trained to never physically engage anyone with a knife and hostile intent, we were trained to shoot until the threat was neutralized, which could include death.
Thankfully, I never had to face that scenario and I was happy to return to my duties as a combat engineer.

(86,822 posts)Anyone in a uniform using gunfire to "neutralize" a threat more often than not end up killing the perp.
MarineCombatEngineer
(12,449 posts)but someone with hostile intent armed with a knife is just as much of a threat as someone with a firearm, and physically engaging someone with a knife is an excellent way to get injured or killed.

(2,928 posts)Security, police, corrections, etc., are trained to shoot center mass. Larger target, easier to hit (or to not miss). Lots of important things in chest cavity, that don't take well to being punctured. You don't go hand to hand with someone with a knife, 2 people will be going to the hospital/morgue. You don't shoot the knife out of their hand, because it is usually moving, very small target to hit under stress, etc. Same with leg, arm, whatever. If you're dumb enough to try and force your way onto a military installation with just a knife, you're bucking for a posthumous Darwin award.

(394 posts)There are a lot of unknowns. If a person is charging at you how many shots can you get off? If you shoot to the legs, many of your shots will miss. Of those that hit, it's possible it may be ineffective. Shots to the body are easier to make and more effective overall so your odds of surviving the situation are better, though there are still no guarantees.
Ultimately it comes down to would you sacrifice your life, or lives of others, to protect the criminal?
