Thieves target Home Depot in California, making off with hammers, crowbars and other tools
Source: CNN
Up to 10 people entered a Home Depot store in California on Friday night and left with a range of stolen tools, according to police officials.
The incident took place at approximately 8 p.m. local time in Lakewood, Los Angeles Sheriff's Department Deputy Miguel Meza told CNN. Lakewood is a city in Los Angeles County
The theft comes as similar tools have been used in a number of smash-and-grab robberies at high-end stores in several major US cities this month.
At least 18 people broke into a Nordstrom department store in Los Angeles Monday night and stole thousands of dollars in merchandise, the city's police chief said. Similar crimes have been reported in the San Francisco Bay Area, Chicago, and other cities.

(13,494 posts)have heard of these smash and grab rings/gangs for years now. These groups seem to be more brazen and seem to have more people in the group when they rob the stores. Reminds me of flash mobs from a few years ago, but with sinister intentions.

In Minnesota I see a lot more out of state license plates than I ever have before and shootings are on the rise. Who is obsessed with guns? Not your average Minnesotan.
But all the crime is dovetailing into their cry that DEMS are weak on crime and that police are hampered by having to treat people like people and not just kill them in the streets.
I think the anarchist and racist groups are coming together and making trouble in DEM areas so that there is a lack of confidence in DEM leadership AND the ReThugs present themselves as the solution.
LOTS of the pardons TRUMP issued may lead to organized crime whose purpose is to start a second civil war and put tRump back on the throne in the White House.
LOTS of MAIL FRAUD pardons in January - Racketeering - Money Laundering - Drug Dealing - Health Care Fraud - Military Convictions overturned for war criminals, CYBER ESPIONAGE in one case so secret we don't even know what he stole/traded.
GREAT SOURCE for people to keep up the chaos and continue the insurrection.

(18,628 posts)Judging by the replies, some seem to think this was a case of where they smashed the window and stole goods in the middle of the night, but that isn't how this new crime works.
They've been doing this around here for a year or so where one or two thieves walk into a Loews or Home Depot and walk out with a couple thousand dollars in big ticket items like A/C units, backpack leaf blowers, and power tools. They hop in the car with no plates and speed away.
They get away with it because they know the store has a no apprehension policy and is too cheap to hire an off duty cop. They're afraid someone might get hurt and sue, or get worker comp. Regardless, the corporation doesn't want cashiers playing Dirty Harry.
The stores have been quiet about this because once people find out they can walk out with anything they want and not be stopped, they will.

(970 posts)Just before Christmas, my son and I were in the local Home Depot, going through the clearance rack at the back of the electrical department. A guy comes up nearby and waits a few minutes. His phone rings, he picks up some high-dollar power tools from his basket, and dashes out the fire escape door. A couple minutes later, an employee comes up and resets the alarm on the door and walks away, like Just Another Thursday. The phone call must have been the signal that the accomplice was next to the door.

In some areas, the police won't come unless it's over a certain amount
Stores write it off as a loss. Kind of like when people take stuff from the self-service check out

(81,455 posts)Four Arrests in Beverly Hills May Be Related to Lakewood Home Depot Theft
Police investigation into the incident is ongoing, as the LAPD searches for suspects and works to confirm whether the four in custody were involved in Friday's Home Depot theft.
By City News Service Published 4 hours ago Updated 44 mins ago
Four individuals, who police believe may be involved in the flash mob theft of at least $400 in merchandise from a Home Depot in the Lakewood Center Mall, were in custody Saturday after being arrested in Beverly Hills.
The police investigation is still ongoing, as police work to confirm whether the four individuals arrested were involved in Friday night's incident.
Police received a call regarding several vehicles driving with no license plates near Beverly Drive and Dayton Way just after 9 p.m. Friday, Sgt. Jeff Newman of the Beverly Hills Police Department told City News Service.
Officers stopped one of the vehicles and took the suspects into custody.

If these are indeed some of the perps, they don't seem too smart. They grab tools at Home Depot and they're still driving around with no license plates an hour later? I have to wonder what they might learn from these individuals.

(1,814 posts)at the HD in Hamden, CT. I've helped the security get the license plates of thieves. Security there does not confront the thieves as one of them got punched by the perp. I watched a guy flash the peace sign in response to "Sir, may I see your receipt??" before he got in a waiting car.
