Magdalena Andersson: Sweden's first female PM returns after resignation

Source: BBC

Sweden's first female prime minister has been reappointed to the top job after political turmoil forced her to resign within hours of taking the post last week.
...
She will attempt to lead a one-party government until an election in September next year.
...
In Monday's vote in Sweden's parliament, the Riksdag, 101 of its 349 members voted yes, 75 abstained and 173 voted no.

To be appointed prime minister under Sweden's political system, a candidate only needs to avoid a majority voting against them.

Ah, the joys of proportional representation and coalitions. It looks like she'll spend her time chasing every vote. Good luck to her.

1. This seems like a season of Borgen, but in Swedish, rather than Danish.

It offers a look into the workings of a parliamentary system - which can be messy and corrupt like ours, although because parties need to form coalitions at least it isn't a zero-sum game like ours.

5. That's a good point about the parliamentary system, and I agree about Borgen. Also, I'm surprised

i still can't speak Swedish...or Danish... or Norwegian... after all the Scandinavian series I've watched during the pandemic!

6. The Scandinavian series are all really good. The best one, I think, is "Occupied"

which is on Netflix. I know some Norwegian (can read better than speak), so I can kind of understand what's going on without being totally stuck to the subtitles - Swedish is actually easier to understand, very similar to Norwegian but they speak more slowly. Spoken Danish is really tough to understand although the words are almost identical; it sounds like Norwegian spoken with a big mouthful of peanut butter. Check out the Icelandic shows - they tend to be particularly dark and weird. I suppose that's a result of being stuck on a small island in the North Atlantic with volcanoes and the hidden people.

7. Oh, yes... I've seen Occupied and Trapped...and lots of Nordic Noir (as they say), and love them

all! It's always startling to me when a major character suddenly speaks English and basically sounds like any random (well spoken) American! It's so cool you actually know some of the languages. The only thing I have picked up is: Absolut!

One series (QUITE different from the ones we've mentioned) that I really like is "Love Me" (Swedish), which I highly recommend if you haven't seen it.

4. As opposed to the "joys" of the U.S.A. two party system...

... where one of the parties has fully embraced everything that is wrong with the U.S.A.?
