US warns Russia has plans for 'large scale' attack on Ukraine

Source: The Guardian

Secretary of state says Nato is ‘prepared to impose severe costs’ on Moscow if invasion attempted

The US says it has evidence Russia has made plans for a “large scale” attack on Ukraine and that Nato allies are “prepared to impose severe costs” on Moscow if it attempts an invasion.

Speaking at a Nato ministers meeting in Latvia, the US secretary of state, Antony Blinken, said it was unclear whether Vladimir Putin had made a decision to invade but added: “He’s putting in place the capacity to do so in short order, should he so decide.

“So despite uncertainty about intention and timing, we must prepare for all contingencies while working to see to it that Russia reverses course.”

I am sure they can put up a fight put so can the other side.

Is the Russian military what it was.

Is it more professional or still a draft style army.

I read the virus has hit Russia hard.

That would effect the military.

in Ukraine a day ago doesn't seem to be working.

"Putin went further than previously in spelling out Russia's "red lines" on Ukraine, saying it would have to respond if NATO deployed advanced missile systems on its neighbour's soil.

"If some kind of strike systems appear on the territory of Ukraine, the flight time to Moscow will be 7-10 minutes, and five minutes in the case of a hypersonic weapon being deployed. Just imagine," the Kremlin leader said.

"What are we to do in such a scenario? We will have to then create something similar in relation to those who threaten us in that way. And we can do that now," he said, pointing to Russia's recent testing of a hypersonic weapon he said could fly at nine times the speed of sound."

if they pull this stunt. It can be done if counties stick together, it will also mean hardship for counties dependent on russian gas and oil. We can't let putin bully US, a super power, we must & can damage his country significantly without firing a shot.

more of & better. They also have the GOP which could do damage on putins behalf. Hacking can be dealt with, my concern would be the oil & gas pipelines that some countries outside of russia depend on & electric power that is also supplied to regions in Ukraine.

It seems like their testing ground for cyber warfare operations. They've caused several large blackouts and cause serious damage to various industries. Seems like a very difficult issue to handle.

There's an interesting book called Sandworm (https://www.amazon.com/Sandworm-Cyberwar-Kremlins-Dangerous-Hackers/dp/0385544405) that talks about this extensively. Totally worth reading or listening to in audiobook format (it's on audible)

I hate that I heard the idea on Morning Blow, but I guess even a broken clock.....

Just let Putin know that if they want a build up in the Ukraine, we will put a giant base in Poland. Poland would love it. Putin would hate it. Several thousand US and NATO troops in Poland. The threat would probably be enough.

It was pointed out that logistics make a significant NATO presence in Ukraine difficult.

Oh. And freeze all Russian property and accounts in the US and Europe. And no travel to US and Europe for Russian oligarchs. None. And put russsia as a terrorist state which forbids any trade with the West.
