BEIJING (AP) Chinas Communist Party took American democracy to task on Saturday, sharply criticizing a global democracy summit being hosted by President Joe Biden next week and extolling the virtues of its governing system.
Party officials questioned how a polarized country that botched its response to COVID-19 could lecture others, and said that efforts to force others to copy the Western democratic model are doomed to fail.
The harsh rhetoric reflects a growing clash of values that has been thrust into the spotlight as China rises as a global power. The question is whether the United States and other leading democracies can peacefully co-exist with a powerful authoritarian state whose actions are at odds with the Western model that emerged victorious at the end of the Cold War.
The pandemic exposed defects in the American system, said Tian Peiyan, the deputy director of the Communist Partys Policy Research Office. He blamed the high COVID-19 death toll in the U.S. on political disputes and a divided government from the highest to the lowest levels.

I do miss the old insults and slip easily into the old rifts. A child of the Cold War I guess. Sometimes I wonder how younger Americans react to things like The Hunt for Red October. Older folks like me get all of the subtilty they may miss entirely.

China is determined to be a 21st century superpower and will take advantage of all weaknesses in their enemies.
My biggest concern is if they join up with Russia. I think Putin is massing troops on the Ukrainian border to test Biden.

They are uniting against the western democracies.

(6,265 posts)ex-President trump exposed all of us to this polarizing and botching. His(TFG) administration shortcomings, especially in disrespecting and possibly polarizing our military with his consistent deriding and disrespect of those willing to go into harm's way was constant. That did not help. It's not us! We believe the science.
Mass shifting to the fascist-authoritative governing models always ends badly. WWII stands out and back through recent-ancient history.
Antebellum South here.
Yet our Democracy is one of the last great hopes in keeping common decency at the forefront of human progress. Let's not squander that asset on a minor human being and his quest for what? Power? Money. Ideological dominance? Those are rejections in my book for keeping our way of life. Lots of healing to be had, yet we have done it before
China is deluding itself. A leopard does not change its spots.

(6,039 posts)Yes. Every country in the world has at least one f up thing about it. You can even say humans are downright f up species.
But I will take a messy democracy over a totalitarian dictatorship every day of the week.
Beijing can kiss our ass.

(3,407 posts)And to the buffoon's defense, it did not start with him, he is not that clever, this is the legacy of the republican party as well.
If anything the buffoon did right, not on purpose of course, was to uncover the vulnerabilities of our Democratic system, it was designed with the assumption that honest, patriotic people would run for office, the buffoon was not in the mind of those who wrote the constitution, although it should have been because of their experience with royalty (dictatorship).
The Chinese are correct, our Democracy has too many problems, the fantasy that we are number one in the World is just that, a fantasy perpetrated by politicians to move the masses. There are so many flaws in our system that must be fixed.
How can we claim we are a Democracy when we have something like the "Electoral College" where a minority can prevail against the wish of the people? In a real Democracy the majority wins, not in the USA, which is why it allows republicans to win while being a minority.
And how about a "Supreme Court" which is politicized and votes against the wish of the people as well?
Gerrymandering, changes on voting laws, disenfranchising of minorities, etc...how can we call all that a Democracy, where do all these things make us number one in the World?
The so called "rule of law", and "no one is above the law" does not hold true, we know this is all a fantasy as well. The rich get away with murder while the poor suffer.
Lets not try to defend the indefensible, we are a broken Democracy, and have been for a long time. Let us not forget that the first step towards fixing a problem is recognizing there is a problem.
