Sen. Amy Klobuchar said 'some pro-choice Republicans' might get on board with codifying Roe v. Wade

Source: Business Insider

Sen. Amy Klobuchar in an interview Sunday said some Republicans could be on board with codifying Roe v. Wade into federal law after the US Supreme Court last week signaled it could buck precedent and limit access to abortion.

Her comments come as the Supreme Court heard arguments last week in a case that could lead to the gutting of Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 Supreme Court decision that has safeguarded access to abortion in the US for decades. Klobuchar, a Democrat from Minnesota, told Chuck Todd during an appearance on "Meet the Press" that Roe v. Wade represented "fifty years of decisions and court decisions, part of the very fabric of women's existence in this country."

"This is how our country protected rights, and now they're willing to just flip it on its head," Klobuchar said of the court. "The answer may well be doing it through the political process now. I don't think that's the right thing to do, but it may be the right way to do it."

"I think the best way to do it is not a patchwork of state laws, but to put it, codify Roe v. Wade, put it into law. We even have some pro-choice Republicans that have signaled interest in doing that," she added.

It's been 48 years that it could have been codified.

I understand that as a Senator, she alway talks up the possibilities, but exactly who is she talking about?

I believe there are Republicans who are secretly pro-choice. But getting them to admit it publicly by supporting a bill is a whole different thing. For one thing, they're too scared of His Royal Orangeness, and for another, they're scared of losing votes (which in some districts would be a not insignificant number).

I really like Amy Klobuchar, and I hope she knows what she's talking about. Time will tell.

But the strings and restrictions they'll put on any legislation makes me think it wouldn't be worth it. Granted, if one girl or woman gets an abortion that needs one, that'll be a godsend, but I suspect the restrictions they put on the legislation will make it impossible to support.

Because if the gop gets on board with and let's a cloture vote get through, we would protect roe v Wade and the gop would be seen as abandoning their base, and it will likely have repercussions next year. And if they don't get on board, then the pro choice voters will be out in force likely preserving democratic control.

It is a lose lose for the gop assuming SCOTUS does what they are expected to do.

After Roe is gone Republicans will still have enough money to fly to pro-choice states to get an abortion.
