Judge scraps Trump lawsuit to shield tax returns from Congress

Source: Politico

A federal judge has rejected former President Donald Trump’s bid to block congressional Democrats from obtaining his tax returns.

Judge Trevor McFadden, a Trump appointee to federal District Court in D.C., said Trump was “wrong on the law” and that Congress is due “great deference” in its inquiries. “Even the special solicitude accorded former Presidents does not alter the outcome,” McFadden wrote in a 45-page ruling. “The Court will therefore dismiss this case.”

McFadden stayed the impact of his ruling for 14 days to allow Trump to appeal the ruling to the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Anyone else want to believe this will be resolved in less than a decade?

If anything gets resolved within the decade I'll be shocked.

What I dislike most about the law and lawyers is how they have no sense of urgency about anything. Unless the flight they are on is delayed by as much as ten minutes. Then they care.

now, an appeal by the 28th of December, and then a circuit ruling, then an appeal to the SCOTUS.

likely a year-plus to get through all that, and the law is crystal clear.

The sole purpose of the Trump lawsuit is to delay everything until after the 2022 election where the hope is that Republicans will pick up the House and terminate the probe. Another example of justice delayed is justice denied.

I remember a DU member said that multiple times after having conversations with judges (or retired judges?) they knew personally. I can't remember who it was???

I never doubted it, I knew it before they said it. Liars like Trump can spew bullshit in public all day long but that doesn't change a single thing about what a judge will do in a courtroom. His attorneys can make ridiculous bullshit arguments & judges will rip them to shreds.

Which is the reason why some of my favorite reading is court rulings. I spend hours reading the words of judges, ripping bullshit arguments to shreds. In general they are a very articulate group & they rarely shy away from thoroughly nailing someone (& their legal arguments) when they deserve it. It can be very entertaining & informative because those exact words can be & often are cited in future cases, & can serve to guide the course of court rulings for years to come.

The only thing that sucks is that if you want to obtain court filings yourself from PACER it costs 10 cents per page, but if you're on Twitter you can find folks in the legal profession who pay the PACER fees themselves & then post the filings for free, which is legal because they are a matter of public record.
