Senate Democrats renew focus on voting rights as domestic policy bill stalls and filibuster changes

Source: Washington Post

Senate Democrats are scrambling to find a way to pass in the coming weeks voting rights legislation they have portrayed as necessary to protect democracy amid increasing pressure to counter Republican changes to election laws in key states and as progress on the domestic policy bill they have made their top legislative priority for months has stalled.

Several lawmakers said Wednesday they are optimistic the new push could succeed where previous efforts have failed because of growing support for changing the Senate’s filibuster rule that has allowed Republicans to block previous attempts to pass voting rights legislation.

But it remained far from certain that the rules changes under consideration would ultimately go beyond nibbling around the edges of the filibuster’s 60-vote supermajority requirement for most legislation, leaving the party once again facing the seemingly intractable predicament of how to deliver on a campaign promise they say is needed to deal with an existential crisis for the country.

“If we can get the congressional voting rights done, we should do it. If we can’t, we’ve got to keep going,” President Biden said Wednesday while visiting storm-ravaged Kentucky. “There’s nothing domestically more important than voting rights.”

And for a much as I admire him and for as long as I've followed him through the years, he'll DIE because Joe Manchin is bound and determined to get the GQP elected just so he can sit back when he's voted out of office and replaced, he and his family will have mountains of monies to live off of, while the rest of us suffer. Meanwhile, the GQP will be busy stealing the Mid-terms, indict Pres. Biden/Kamala and go about the business of totally destroying this country when they PUT a GQP'er in the White House. Manchin is the king maker. He's destroying what little democracy we have left of this country, and world. He won't do voting rights, because he says it's disenfranchising The GQP US Taliban Party, and his corporate over-lords told him to stop BBB, which would benefit his state, but he doesn't give a fuck about his own constituents. The galling thing is that Manchin wrote the current bill, plus he promised he'd get 10 GQP'ers to go along with the bill, and NONE did. That was a fucking LIE. There could be a carve out, but Manchin won't go along with that, and without that the Dems are done. We can't win with all of the cheating that WILL be going on during the 2022 Mid-terms/2024 GE. The GQP hates voting rights. Gerrymandering, and States legislatures which will be mostly GQP'ers sooner rather than later, will certify a GQP'er the winner of the presidency even IF a Dem wins the presidency.

Dems are screwed into fucking HELL thanks to Manchin & Sinema.

This country/Dems are screwed into complete and UTTER HELL, as this country will be fascist if all that can happens DOES happen the next few years.

That would bring it up to like 60 days. I don't think he can go that long.

we know that Manchin is a rotten, thieving son of a bitch in it ONLY for the money. The people in hie own state don't have teeth nor hearing aids but he doesn't give ONE fuck about them or about our democracy.

But while Sinema is making it clear that she supports voting and election reform bills that have been blocked by GOP senators, she is also standing by her support for keeping the 60-vote legislative filibuster and warning against a carve-out from the rule for voting rights.
