Pro-Beijing candidates sweep Hong Kong elections

Source: McClatchy

HONG KONG -- Candidates loyal to China’s Communist Party won a landslide victory in Hong Kong’s legislative elections after pro-democracy activists were imprisoned and authorities received the power to exclude those deemed inappropriate for office.

Candidates loyal to Beijing won a majority of the seats in Sunday's election after the laws were changed to ensure that only pro-Beijing “patriots” could run the city.

Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam said during a news conference Monday she was “satisfied” with the election despite a 30.2% voter turnout — the lowest since the British handed Hong Kong over to China in 1997.

She said that the number of registered voters reached 92.5%, a record high compared to the 2012 and 2016 elections, when around 70% of voters had registered.

On the other hand, it's not communism that is at fault so much as authoritarianism.

The oligarchs know how to create autocracies, let people vote and then they count the votes. They end up with an autocratic dictatorship and can call it democratic, just where the US is heading. Not enough is said about the American oligarchs behind the slide to our autocracy. We moan and groan about the MSM and blame the news anchors who are only reading from scripts prepared by the oligarchs. MSNBC is owned by Comcast whose 2 main share holders are Vanguard and BlackRock.

Listen to real progressive news on the internet or on Sirius radio and you will see the difference between real news and oligarchs controlling the narrative.

"MSNBC is owned by Comcast whose 2 main share holders are Vanguard and BlackRock."

Together, they own just over 15% of the shares of Comcast. That's a lot of money, but it's not like a controlling interest. Or control, even if they both wanted exactly the same thing all the time.

Out of curiosity, I'd like to read sources which you consider to be real progressive news on the internet.

If you could provide me with several links, I'd be grateful.

Actually, I find both of these guys a bit annoying at times, but they deal straight poker on China. They both have Chinese spouses and operated a small motorcycle repair business in China. Together they traveled across much of China and made some documentaries about it. Both have been forced to leave since then and host a podcast.

Today's podcast is about China's crappy bridges and roads.
