First confirmed US death related to Omicron variant was unvaccinated and had been infected before

Source: CNN

A Texas man, whose death was the first confirmed Omicron-related in the US, was unvaccinated and had previously been infected with the coronavirus, according to a press release from Harris County Public Health.

"The individual was at higher risk of severe complications from Covid-19 due to his unvaccinated status and had underlying health conditions," the release said.

County Judge Lina Hidalgo announced the death on Monday, saying the man was in his 50s. The case is the first known confirmed Omicron-related death in the US.

Now how could that be?

I've been assured by any number of self-appointed health experts on the internet that the immunity which comes from being previously infected is guaranteed safety.

Along the lines that Omicron was fading in South Africa because everyone had natural immunity from previous infections, so therefore their data was invalid.

Based on who populates (and are NOT populating) ICU these days, vaccines appear to be far less variant-specific and provide a wider range of protection, particularly for those who are fully vaxxed+ booster.

lucky to have these self-appointed geniuses on the internet who know more than all of the scholarly researchers. I guess there is no need for advanced education anymore, just close all of the universities/medical schools. And we always have the stable genius, Donald Trump as backup.

Depends on the pathogen. Like most things, it's complicated. Lots of hypothesis and theories based on what we know now, but a whole lot is still unknown.

She's the head of the Harris County Commissioners court.

"During times of emergency, Lina is also Harris County’s Director of Homeland Security and Emergency Management. In that capacity, she has steered the community through several natural and man-made disasters.

The Commissioners Court plays a critical role that is part administrative and part legislative. Its many responsibilities include adopting a budget, building and maintaining county infrastructure such as roads and bridges, and overseeing services like courthouses, hospitals, libraries, and parks.

So now four states use this setup.

Instead of lay employees it requires lawyers to make the record keeping more accurate, yes?
I wonder why most states don't use this system.
